Sorry if this has been asked before, but im after a mk2 golf gti,im more used to my re-mapped bora tdi,but my g/f is going to get that(if she look's after it anyway!)but im getting conflicting advice and thought this would be the best place to ask.I'v owned half of a 16v mk2 years ago and loved every minute of it,but i'v never owned or drove a 8v and i'v had a few people tell me the 8v is better,im not lookin for a show winner im only after something i can use daily and have some fun in,Ones i'v looked at are well in to 130k+,i know old golf's go for ever but how relaible are the with this sort of milage?

There are literally a million threads on here about this topic so do a search mate. People come out with stuff like the 8v has better torque but its all crap. The 16V KR engine has a stronger torque curve all the way and has a higer peak power. You also get bigger breaks and slightly lower stiffer suspension so they are better.

Now cue all the 8V owners.

if its for town driving i would say get a 8v i had 2 and loved them . got a mk1 16v and its good once out ou a open road . as for fuel they are both good if driven well .

if it was me looking tho i would go for a 8v as they are simple to work on most mk2s have over 130 k on them but don't be put off just give them a good looking over and try the gearbox out as they are the weak point on any mk2
