That could well be the case Chris. Would be good to find an owner of one who has owned it from new.

Just found this thread regarding the GT on VWvortex. Have a scroll down the page, quite a few pictures of various "GT's"...

Ah, there are GTs and GTs.

There used to be a Jetta GT - UK model, same badge style.

The Euro one was far more the GTI clone - by a big margin.

They all seem to come with single tailpipes...

Definately. The us spec look like standard uk drivers, but with a Jetta front end!!!

Get a "Birth Certificate" from the VW Museum. It costs €35 and takes about 30 days.
Then we will know for sure.
    HAS IT GOT A SUNROOF?

I think the Special will be a crossover 90 spec, used not only to boost sales of the old style before big bumpers but to use up any stock of soon to be deleted parts.

All Jetta GTI 8V came with single tail pipe ( exact same system as a 1.8 carb)
only the 16V came with twin pipes

i Have gt 'special', its a lhd debadged gti, it does come with the parts listed, ie oak green, tinted windows and rear lights but is def a 16v gti, it also has a rather nice oettinger conversion too:thumbup:
I think it depends on the country, i have seen a couple of gts before in germany and they were gtis, in the uk however it seems they are golf drivers.

Just like my Driver. Mine came with GTI everything except for the interior and the engine.

Another weired thing was that mine had a red line going around just over the swage line, which ive only seen once before. But the original GT badge puzzles me [:s]

    Which i totally ruined lol.

I got rid of the red line, small bumpers ect, and went for the 90spec GTI look, including the engine change, soon to be an 8vT.

Still got the GT badge on the back with the red logo

    How it looks now -

never seen the red line, maybe it was fitted aftermarket as the gt usually had no red trim on them from what i remember.

I had a GTI 16v "Special" about 9 or 10 years ago for a short period of time.

It was an 88 model in graphite black and it was basically anniversary spec, tinted rear lights, rainbow trim etc.

It was also a LHD import and had the anniversary/special service pack mentioning the 10millionth Golf.

Oh, and it had the digifiz clocks as well!

    I wish i kept it.............

    Code E1E

The GT Special is a German spec and has the code E1E, which can be found in the boot or in the service book. So you should be able to check if you've got one.

The main points to distinguish it from at UK Driver is the black headlining, the tinted rearlights and the BBS RA alloys and so-called "Rainbow" sport seats.

It never had the GTI splitter at the front and always small bumpers.

The engines were 1.8 and could have been either typical GTI engines in 8V (PF, PB) or 16V (PL or KR) but also the 90bhp monojet engine (RP), which was very popular in Germany.

That's my old car! 'Fugly' I used to call it. Sold it about 3 years ago.

As far as I remember, when I bought it, it was registered in Germany (perhaps someone working for the forces?) and was GTI spec. It was a standard 1.8 16v, with late-spec door glass, small bumper trim, rainbow interior, tinted glass, electric windows, non-painted mirrors, plain black bumpers and plain 4 lamp set up. The chin spoiler had vents through to the front brakes, and the car was properly badged as a GTI 16v at the back. It also had a standard twin pipe GTI exhaust system.

I did mess around with it a bit, which I regret now, but attitudes to cars change as you mature.. One thing I will say is it looked a lot better in my ownership than it does in that advert! I saw that ad and almost bought her back to save her, but sadly didn't have the spare cash or space at the time.

Here's a link to my page/build thread for it:
    http://www.badlyparkeddubs.co.uk/members/sav/

(Just posting on here as I noticed it's up for sale again on e38 and someone linked this page)
