I made my own with 4 relays (2 low beam and 2 high beam)
    for using 90/130w H4 bulbs.

I also run 2 or 4 Cibi super oscars with 130w H1s for road rallys and general sillyness.
These have 1 relay per 2 lamps, the relays are switched into the high beam circuit via an old fog lamp switch that i found in my spares bucket.

Before i did this (using 55/60w H4s), the car had a tendancy to cremate ignition switches, due to me constantly flicking between high and low beam on road rallies. i also toasted a light switch.

the upgraded loom makes no difference to the lights themselves, it just means that you can install monster bulbs.

I had a old spare loom that I chopped the headlamp connectors of in order to build my uprated loom. that way I kept the original headlamp plugs on the original loom so that I can bypass the relays should the need arise.
a trip to the scrappy with some wire cutters should sort that one for you.

    hope that helps

Does the looms adjustment (from matey-matey site and pre-configured looms sold on ebay) affect the dim sidelight light output and just uprate the output from the h4 lamps.

As I see note about disconnecting the dim lamp part of sidelights circuit when upgrading some thing about disconnecting the cabl to coil near the air box, what if I still want the dim lamp output (with a brighter light)when the sidelights are on and uprate the output from the h4 lamps.

I recently bought an upgraded loom from MattieG (he sells on ebay aswell). The quality and fit are better than some of the others available and is plug and play. He also has a loom for 4 lamps. In addition to the loom I am running Osram Silverstar's. Both make a big difference. You can run higher wattage bulbs with upgraded looms.

took me a while messing about with mattieg's loom, fitting and taking back out again a good few times, puting new plugs on etc before it finally stopped blowing headlight bulbs (touch wood)...

so now i've put the good bulbs in

    80/100W in headlights
    130W in spots

    i can see now [:D]

the looms do make a big improovment on standard bulbs, and make it safe for uprated bulbs too

You have to disconnect the dim-dip cicuit, as otherwise the relayed loom will switch dipped on even when you only want sidelights.

You need to use at least 2 relays, one for dipped, and one for main beam.

Beware the 'matey-matey' guide as they neglect to instruct you to uprate the earth side of the loom too, which is just as important as uprating the +ve side.

It is well worth doing. I bought one of Mattie's looms, and I also put in new Hella headlamp and spot lamps, and switched to Osram Silverstar H4s and Philips Rallye 100w H3s. Check out my before and after pics ...

the reason you use two relays for dip and two reays for main is so that if one fuse or one relay fails you only lose one lamp, if you have both dip or both mains running off one relay then you may lose both if the fuse or relay fails, and if that happens at night it could be nasty.

can some one give me a list of what i need to get:

what relays, guage wire, fuses etc...

thanks alot , im going to make a relay for my mk1, i have one in my mk2 at the mo, but it has only uprated the dipped, not the beam as well,

im going to get some uber bright bulbs too, - and ideas where to get them, i dont think helfords sell any thing bigger than 60/100!?

open the bonnet, and find the dim dip resistor, attached to the front pannel near the driver side headlight, size & shape of a packaet of polos. Follow the yellow wires from it, disconnect the plug and bin the resistor :)

i agree. mattie_g's looms are first rate. well made and easy to fit.

one thing i did with mine though was to extend the loom to the relays to put them behind the battery as i found that they were getting wet behind the headlight and starting to go rusty.

it was only a matter of time before strange things started happening with the lights once the relay contacts had rusted shut.

other than that they are the mutts
