Lovely earth and positive cables to the starter ! I've just replaced a 10 year old Bosch starter on my 8valve GTi. I would have repaired it, but the inside was far too rusty. Now wish I'd thought of using a diesel starter. Maybe next time.
Thanks mate. Shouldn't need a diesel unit for an 8v, original starter should be plenty, or it certainly was on my own 8v. But hey, its a nice upgrade for next time anyway!
yeah the mk3 8v starter should have been enough for the abf as well, so I suspect its worn out or a sub-standard rebuild job. does have proper bosch re-man sticker on it so would be surprising if thats the case tho I had a used mk3 8v starter on mine for years never an issue
Yes, I thought that just after posting. Upgrades or over spec'd product are always tempting, but a bigger starter motor requires a better condition battery so it's really a case of "sufficient is enough" when it comes to starter motors.
Could be right John, after a few goes at cranking when the engine would stick the starter would be quite hot to touch. Also true, the battery on the car is about 6 odd years old now, its served its time well so far...
