    Thanks!

*Maybe this info could be added to the pictorial guide on the first page**

...since this is an upgrade guide for a mk2, most people using this guide will not have a mk3 repair manual.

Just phoned up VW to order the parts to change the top mounts on my Mk2 gti. I gave them the part number 1HO412341 for the top spring plate, but was advised this wouldn't fit with the later top mount bush (1995-1998), so I ordered 1J0412341 which is the later spring plate. The plate has arrived and doesn't have a tab underneath to lock on to the top coil end of the spring. Do I need to order the earlier spring plate and the matching earlier top bush mount (1992-1995). I only ask as I don't want to take the suspension apart and find out I've got the wrong parts. Cheers

Something to think about. Ordered a couple of uprated mounts/bearings from ebay for the cordoba rally car. Seem good value.
The car uses 'coilovers' (horrible description, but understood). Built the top assembly up minus the spring to confirm the thrust bearing had the right endfloat and discovered it didn't rotate with both inner and outer nuts tight.
To cut a long story short, had to make some top hats to go under the bearing and shim under the shaped nut and shim under the top nut.
Learnt a bit too (excuse to do a little lathe work).
Wonder how many sets there are out there in service with inoperable top thrust bearings? (ie the damper rod clamped solid and rotating in the damper body when you turn the wheel)
Can provide a drawing to those really interested.
Would be interested in others thoughts.

Can you fit the mk3 mounts and spring plates to a mk2 and keep the original top plate and nut?

mk3 biza/late caddy type are different, they have similar style to mk1 in that the mounts bolt to the turret

the mk3 type mount is found on:
    96-03 - caddy
    89-95 corrado
    92-98 golf/vento/cab
    88-97 passat
    96-00 polo classic
    93-99 cordoba
    93-99 ibiza
    96-03 inca
    92-99 toledo

upper strut retainer plate seems to be a vw only part, seat/caddy/polo classic chassis use a different one

Hmm my 2002 inca had a mk3 style mount. I heard polo mounts fit too, and drop the car a touch, where the mk3 ones lift it a shade? I don't have coilovers.

mine did raise it a bit, but i think that was more to dowith the old top mounts being knackered rather than the mk3 mounts beign any taller. im talking maybe a few mm if anything and the old ones were properly squashed

Mine raised the front end noticeably when I went from mk2 stlye to mk3 style top mounts. Some of it would have been from the old rubber compressing but the newerdesign is taller when compared with a new mk2 top mount. I'm sure that's one of the reasons late corrados look like they're on stilts. Swapped the spring plates for the JOM -10mm ones and took it back down to the same level as before. No issues with them and they're TUV approved so no worries about them failing.

Ive got coilovers from Mk3 already with Mk3 top mounts on but they seem to knock on my mk2. Seems to be a bit of a gap at the top? Am I missing something?

very useful guide. i did this job today but would just like to double check that this part is not required when fitting mk3 top mounts on a mk2 with coilovers:

should it sit on top of the bearing or can it be omitted?

i sat the bearing directly on top of the coilover with nothing else on the threaded rod. i then put the rubber top mount on the bearing. i then attached it to the car with a mk3 top plate and nut as shown in the previous photos.

and for those who would like to know, it looks like the front has been raised by a few mm and the top plate is snug and tight with no play.

    cheers!
