I know the engine is the same 2L TFSI Lump with a slight different mapping, giving it 10hp iirc. But whats the 'R' version going to be? Will it run the R32 lump still or move onto the R36? Now that i'm interested in at the end of this year...
i believe the .:R20 i going to be the same engine and drivetrain setup as the current s3 so 260ps with haldex 4wd
I agree with JonP the new Golf's a squashed Scirroco, not that it's a bad thing though Scirroco on the left, Golf on the right (or is it the other way round?)
That isnt even an accurate or real picture of the Mk6 GTI. Its an artistic impression based on the Rocco by the looks of it. R20T looks awesome. Might be our next car after looking at the pics and details on Autoexpress today.
The R20 is being talked about as 2.0 turbo. My worry is what happens to 'GTI' ? I mean you can't just go "n'emind, R20 it is from now on" Everyone still wants the reassurance that there's a GTI, and yet it'll play a very close second fiddle to the R20 (unlike the R32 which is viewed as 'distant'). It'll be "oh, I see you've got a GTI. Didn't you fancy the R20?" "No. F*ck off " Devaluing what a GTI stands for Finding that a tricky one to get my head round.
Your dead right Chris, I get grief off my mates about my Mk5 "Its only a GTI, should have got the R32" Should have always left the GTI at the top of the performance tree, R32 should be a GTI Syncro but thats just my opinion..... Having said that I will have an R20 when my three years is up with my current GTI.
I thought the 2litre 8v Mk4 did that. But I do agree with the piont. I can see the headlines now: "The R20, everything the GTI should be, but isn't quite"
The prob is positioning a better car just above the GTI. The R32 sits clearly high enough up to keep out of the way (IMO). The R20 will be a GTI-R nonsensy, blah, blah (Dear VW, WTF is it? 4WD lard wagon? GTI, but better You what??? Well it's the GTI then, numpties. Demote the other one) The MK4 2.0 8v GTI , or the 1.8 N/A 20V GTI were wallowing POS, but the GTI 1.8T still sat above.
Where does something like the mk3 VR6 fall in this argument then? There were similar comments to "what the GTI should have been" when the V6 4motion was released!
One thing i'd change sadly is the wheels, why have they kept the mk5 gti alloys? As much as I like them its sad to see the previous mk's alloys being used again.
Credit where it's due, sounds duller than a dull day day in Dullvile but with a remap Claire's Edition 30 is a cracking car @ 270ish bhp.
More info coming through on the Golf R20 and there's a Scirocco R20 too, spied testing at the 'Ring: Looks like it'll be a firm favourite to be debuted at Worthesee, if the last two years are anything to go by
I want a 'Rocco R20. However, that Rocco is absolutely no different from a standard Scirocco GT. Unless its the one at the back? However, that doesnt have fog lights at all.
