yeah looks the same doesn't it.

The way i have always seen it - is the VR6 is on par with the gti (costs more, but normally higher spec and bigger engine etc) it is more a case of which one you like most.

In the mk4 guise, i would have the R32 on looks and interior plus not keen on 1.8 20v.

With the mk5 I would have the gti, as the engine is great and prefer FWD handling. Personal preference not an upgrade/downgrade.

if the R20 is a 2.0T 4 wheel drive will be similar but you don't get the V6 so not even as good as a R36 would have been

Tax. Would you want to pay 900 for the first years tax, and 450 per year after? Thats the reasoning for changing the premium model to a 2.0T. Its basically going to be a VW Golf S3.

mmm not really!!!! that is a lot. I wouldn't ever spend 25k on a car though, assumed people that do would just pay stuff like that to have it

It could be stealth - looks like an industry test day at the 'Ring to me.

They will have to differentiate it somehow?

Would have been nice if someone could have peeped underneath to spot a haldex diff on the rear.

I guess the sensible thing would have been to make a VR6 based Scirocco and R20 Golf.

Why would that be sensible? Still subject to the same tax.

That's the discussion in a nut shell. The government road tax hikes are killing off big engine cars! It's a shame as it means great engines in real world cars will disappear for good.

Hopefully those 3.2 V6 engines will become cheap and readily available to drop into our Mk1&2's at some stage [:D] We'll just need to find some 4WD conversion

Thats the beauty, doesnt matter what engine is in an old car, as you will just pay the standard tax rate. Unelss they increase that to 400 in the future too, to try and force old cars off the road.

well sensible from the perspective that VAG now have the S3, (R20) GTI & Scirocco all competing in exactly the same market with pretty much identical performance. Personally I'm a massive fan of VR6 engines and would love to have seen an R32 scirocco.

So would i, but wouldnt pay the 900 first years tax, neither would anyone else unless they are rich, and they are a different car market heading for more premium brands.

I think I've just woken up in a different decade. 900 for road tax?? WTF????

Where is that one-eyed Scottish idiot? I know he's not far away.

Not coming in until 2011 Chris, but yes, on the highest tax band cars, the first years tax will be 900. Following years it drops to 450. At least, thats what the rates were, and i know there have been amendments due to the criticism the scheme got.

What a load of f*cking rubbish. Environmentalist c*cksuckers.

I bumped into a mate last night who's designing some atrocious cycling scheme in London. It's going to cost them a fortune and it's Mr Short Term-ism, at it again.

The sooner some of these swampy veg-mentalists are shot, the better.
