    afternoon,

just wondering, i filled the tank to full on my mk2 golf gti 8v digi '92 and got 350 miles out of it which equates to about 28.7 mpg. is this god or bad?

    all responses gratefully received

How are you working this out - are you assuming that the tank is empty when you fill up and using it's full capacity to work out the MPG?

Best way is to make a note of how much you put in when you fill up and how many miles you've done since you last filled.

28mpg sounds a bit on the low side unless you're doing a lot of town driving or constant high speeds on the motorway. I get around 33mpg (actual) from my valver, and struggle to get the mfa to read lower than 25mpg when abusing it.

The smoke is probably just valve stem seals so not a massive problem.. think mine have gone as it smokes a bit.

28 sounds very low to me. I used to get that from my S3!

never calculated what my valver uses but it always seems to much. if i drive it hard.

one thing i noticed is if i fill it up with 95 ron its seems to go quicker than 99ron

is this possible or am i imagining it!

I get around 260 miles to 40, but I sont use it as a commuter, only a pleasure driver, so alot of those miles are covered very quickly...

I seem to get loads out of my MK3 16valver. It averages about 34mpg around town and loads more on the motorway. It can get quite low if i cane it of course.

Where are you getting 99ron from??

    that's bothering me now.

maybe it needs a tune up or something.

any ideas why it would be giving such a low figure? i'd say motorway and in town mileage was around 50/50.

    any advice much appreciated

25-35mpg on a mk2 GTI digi 8v is normal - 350-380 miles on a tank of fuel is perfectly fine, bit more if you mostly clock up motorway miles. I had that figure in both my 8v's, and my friends all get the same mileage in theirs.

thanks funkbaron, that's eased my worries. but the mpg figure used to be higher.

i filled the car to full and reset the trip thingy, 55 litres divided by 4.5 to give gallons(hope this is right?) gives 12.22 gallons.

i divided 346 miles done as near to emptying the tank as i dared.

    346/12.2=28.36 mpg

Check to see what the MFA is reading on both motorways and town driving - if it sticks between the 25-35mpg, there is no problem.

my MFA always reads 99.9 MPG I WISH!!! lol

Suttonval u can get 99RON at most Tesco store garages
and it seemed quite good as i ran highest BHP figure on Rollin rd when using it

(yes i know it could have been down to other factors)

My petrol flap sticker says to use "super unleaded only 98ron" so it makes sense to only put in te good stuff.

28 sounds low to me, I get better than that from my 3.5 litre bimmer (on a motorway anyway). My driver will get about 30mpg, mostly city driving. But this is with a carb, I would expect a un-modded digi to do better than that

    MPG

28mpg - oh dear. On a motorway run and sticking roughly to the limit I get 40mpg and taking things a little easier in France last week (out of town limit is around 55mph) got over 400 miles from a tankful and still wasn't in the red on the needle. The car - Mk2 1.8 Driver with a GTi cam and exhaust. And I regularly got 40mpg out of my old 2.0L Toledo on a run, and from my Mk1 GTi. Me thinks a lighter right shoe might help - and try using the two gears above 3rd, they are there honest

i haven't got a heavy right foot and i try and use the higher gears as quickly as possible.

could there be some other problem? to do with co2 mixture? idling wrong maybe?

petrol leakage cos i can smell petrol sometimes wheni put the blowers on and when i sniff the engine bay, not over powering but annnoying nonetheless.

regards to everyone for input and shaming my mpg figure
