Out of winter hibernation comes H909CFJ.

Some of you will know this car but I have owned this car since 1997. It has some pedigree and was sold and bought back from another forum member some years ago.

I have had GTI's in numerous forms for nearly 28 years

    Here are a few:
    http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.p...2-16V-Toy-my-other-tasty-Vee-Dubs!&highlight=

My last outing on track with the MK2 was at Castle Combe at the RS Ford day!!

Great day as some will know.

Unfortunately although I got home the box started to make a nasty whine on lift off.....and so it's now had a full rebuild by Graham Scott (ex TSR workshop manager of old!!)

A new Sachs sports clutch and pressure plate fitted together with a full service.

Next up is a trip to Vince at Stealth to ensure and hope I can emulate some strong figures.!!

Some old members will remember my GTI which was always 'pretty' strong on the rollers but more so on the track!!

It has a nice old skool build and I have kept it reasonably OE except for the drivers seat which sports a nice Recaro seat. I still have all the interior and a few years ago it underwent a bit of restoration.

It lives in a very dry warm environment will be pretty hard for me to sell it on so I have decided to give it to my son when he is older.

The car was featured several times in VW Audi Mag as well as VW Driver and the infamous 16V sprint day at Brunter's covered by Performance VW.

I am now looking for a new toy for European trips and some more track excursions.

    So far I have narrowed it down to RS3 / 400R / S3 / Golf R / M4 or Cayman GT4 (used).
It needs to be multi functional and practical and a slow burner so I expect the 400R may fit the bill.

    Thoughts.

I'll post some pics and a seperate thread when I visit Stealth.

I have since fitted a new 'quieter' Jetex full system together with a new Milltek DP last year as 16 years of Castle Combe eventually killed off my Remus Baffles in the old system!!

Will get some more pics up in the next week.

Hopefully see a few old faces at Inters this year or meet a few of the older members if they're about still at some events.

Good to hear you and the old beast is still going strong!

Now get some ITBs on that for some even stronger numbers and more importantly, even faster track performance.

    Good to be back.

Kjet it is.....simple and was always set up well on the old girl by Graham.....he knows Kjet of old from his VW Cup days when with Tim Stiles.

Box is lovely and quiet now.

Sachs clutch feels very good and car is ready for MOT next week.

Stealth visit imminent for a nice set up

Hi ian, always enjoyed reading about your vehicles in volkswagen audi car, especially the 16v mk2, the pre cursor to the now popular abf coversion (2 litre in 16v format route!). There has been a bit of coverage on here recently regarding old skool 16v motors namely those from gti engineering etc, but i always liked the work tim stiles did and also his standing within the industry. I know tim regarded your white golf as one of his favorites, back then it was amd (geoff everett) tim stiles, brian ricketts, c&r, if your car was good enough for tim it mustve been good!

on the subject of the standard injection system ian, has your cars injection /fuelling proved to be largely trouble free and robust over the years or has it required constant monitoring and fettling? Im really interested in having my abf mk2 which is also running kjet optimised/tweaked to get the best from it, geographically for me at least it will more than likely make the short trip to awesome gti, saying that we do tend to take a few breaks a year to south devon and we know whos based down there?......

Great to see and read about your gti mk2 through the years, and long may we continue to do so!

    stew.

I have been considering a road / track tourer for some time now, looking to meet the following criteria:

    1. Rollcage 2. Space to carry spare wheels 3. Normally aspirated 4. Rear wheel drive ... in order of priority

Not an easy fix ... having driven RWD VAG`s ;) on track and stage over the past two years they are superb, unfortunately they can not meet no.2  :)

    BMW 1 series perhaps ?

EDIT 1: 130i is a possibility, positive feedback out there ...

    EDIT 2 : or maybe ... http://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-driven/ford-mustang-gt-driven/32101 [:D]

Andy speak to Kevin Bird @ Birds based in Uxbridge.
He is a wealth of information and Motorsport knowledge around BMW's.

You may well know the company as it also sells very interesting BMW's and I have gone to them before.

They have a few interesting cars for sale at mo.

They are Hartge specialist but also deal with Alpina products.

I have just sold a F31 Tourer which was Xdrive and had some AC Schnitzer goodies on the car and went to him for further advice as as Lorcan at Rossiters ( AC Schnitzer main agent).

Glad you liked the car Harry.

Yes KJET has been very reliable and stable.

The fuelling was fettle by Tim and his guru's Paul Saunders who moved to Mc Claren and his head of the development team on the new P1 based in Spain. Graham Scott originally set the who fuel system. The line pressures were measured and tweaked.
The K jet metering head was a new item I bought from Geoff Everett at AmD when I knew him whilst running Club Vr6 with a couple of friends back in the late 90's. They were the days as they and Scott's Mototune sponsored our club.
Geoff and Mike were very very good at KJET set up and obviously Geoff who sadly is no longer with us Invented Kstar.

I will no doubt be tracking CFJ 2-3 this year as I do every year but still like to keep it relatively original to look at.

Thank you ian, those were the days, proper golf Gti 'ing at its pinnacle, loved all the articles relating to amd, tsr, and well modified golf mk2's! Your car is testament to the Kjet system, it's durability and its ability to provide such good fun, so glad to see CFJ back and to hear it will be back out this year too. Here old cars have taken on a new meaning for me, I think it's when you realise that they aren't just old cars, they are infact very old cars now! And to chose to keep one going is a bit of a commitment, (mines in daily use) but such a rewarding experience. Many a fine tune can be played.....!!!

Edit: perhaps I'm living in the past, But there isn't a car I'd rather drive to be honest than a mk2.

    Thanks, stew (harryvr6).

Good MK2's are appreciating in value so as long as I can keep it dry and warm in the winter I will keep hold of it for my lad.

For all of the expensive investments on my MKIV or MKV Edition 30 running 340+ it could never emulate the MK2's lap times at Combe which is testament to it's chassis, power to weight advantage and proper non ESP car!! The brakes and tyres for track work are so much cheaper than the big brake kits you now need on the heavy bloated newer stuff.

Hi, I agree, the simplicity and lack of electronics give the mk2 soul and occasion, safety has moved on but for a car like a mk2 its about power to weight, hence the success when on track!

I sold a very well sorted mk1 leon Cupra a while ago, it was set up extremely well by a previous owner, Koni coilovers, s3 hubs, strut braces, brembo brake calipers, and fine tuned geometry it handled very well. Trouble was it was heavy and ultimately a bit dull, no thumbs up from other road users, no admiration from other drivers (unlike with the mk2!), it wasn't a mk2 golf and I didn't jump out of it after a drive fizzing with pride.
Trouble was my eldest lad loved the noise it made and still isn't very happy with me for selling it which upsets me in a way, not helped by the fact that when ive sold previous cars ive never seen them again, but with the leon we regularly see it!.

I don't think my mk2 is of the pedigree of yours ian, it didn't cost me much, I've owned a mk2 with full history stacks of paperwork but the body strangely wasn't as good as my current 'don't know much about its past' golf. All I can hope is to preserve it as best I can on my budget and enjoy it.

Sounds like a great plan you have to let your son have your car one day. Not quite in the same league as a mk2 Gti, but a lad at work used to be picked up from primary school by his best friends parents in a cavalier gsi, his best friend now owns this car and it is apparently in mint condition too! Seems to be the way forward, a young lad on our rd runs around in a classic beetle, it's better than driving a modern euro box, much cooler!
    Cheers, stew.

Yep have to agree the MK1's and 2's are becoming a bit of an icon to collectors and are pretty cool.
I am going for a few coastal runs in her this year now I have a 'quieter' Jetex mated to a new Milltek manifold.....much more pleasant for everyday use.

I would like to compliment the MK2 in the future as mentioned with an all rounder for long trips and some track excursions so I will test a few and consider my options.
