How much perpex do you need to do a full set of mk1 windows whats the best stuff to use and how thick does it need to be? Cheers
Perspex is expensive and will be just as cheap to buy ready made from Plastics 4 performance 175 full kit but if you do make your own go for Plexi Glass
i looked into makeing them as the GF dad is a glazer and could get perpex/plexi glass trade, was cheaper to get then kit from P4P!
what are you going to use to cut it? as a jigsaw has a tendency to scratch easily. Edit: that is unless you clamp it inside 2 other materials (1 above/1 below) otherwise the plate running along can rub the pieces flying off along the surface. Edited by: fthaimike
Steve R has just fitted his rear windows with plexi, he now needs to wear trunks every time he drives in the rain
was thinking about this the other day if your using thin stuff....... & you use the original window rubbers but glue a ridge along one side (inside) of the glass that would be under the rubber on the inside to make the glass the same width as the original& press against the rubber to make a water tight seal?
front glass is 4mm and rear is 3mm on the mk2. i've used the original rubber seals for the rear 3 pieces which seal fine, the rain just comes in the front glass past the lower rubber seals that always leaks. rather than hitting the membrane or soaking into the doorcard when its torn/missing it ends up in the rear passenger footwell as i have no doorcards at the moment fronts will be plastic soon and sealed in so no more leaks
cant you tack the inner & out part of the door together just up inside to pull the two together tightening the gap as it doesn't matter now because the windows dont wind down?
i got mine from screwfix, in their catalogue they have stuff (sorry cant remember techinical term might be polycarb, was a year ago) that is loads stronger than glass (100x) got the same thickness as glass made rear screen rear sides front one piece and made some sliders too, and had loads left over. cost 125. been in a year no scratches and no yellowing or fogging.
I dont think they are designed to lock as it's for a track car but i suppose there's some way......mind you it cant be tha hard to maybe get some kind of catch or peg that locks from the inside.
What you want for the job as said is Polycarbonate (plexi-glass is just an American brandname), we sell PC from 3 different manufacturers with Lexan from GE plastics being the market leader. Their Excell-D grade is UV stabilized and guarenteed not to "yellow" for 10 yrs outdoor. PC does scratch very easily, if you have it in your car and its not scratched you are very lucky! Although you can get scratch resistant varients eg Lexan Margard (tis more expensive obviously). I can get the materials to do this for free (offcuts from work) but I just need to get so many other things done first there's no point in attempting it. P.S If you want a contact for one of our local branches in the UK to get prices etc PM me
Ah, someone from the inside! Well P4P use a poly/plexi combined, sourced from Plexi-glass which they call 'Flexiglass 075'. This is the proper stuff. It has a perspex layer on it, and a polycarb core, which gets the best of both worlds: 1) scratch resistant, much more so than plain polycarb (which scratches at nothing) 2) shatter 'proof', like polycarb. Are you able to point us to whatever this specific Plexi-glass product is? Would be majorly appreciated! Edited by: Chris Eyre
I have a set of the smoked ones that demon tweeks sell, they are well cut and the edges arent rough. Its only a light smoke tint.
