Radiator (and IC) for 16V G60

I've heard bad things on here about those Sprinter van ICs from Trendy Tramp - But as I have no experience of these I don't think I can comment of their efficiency.

If you want a big rad get a Corrado VR6 one and stick either a Rallye, an Allard Rallye copy or a Merc sprinter IC in front of it. The G60 IC won't fit in front of a Corrado rad cos of the end caps, although the core is identically sized to that of the Rallye.

360 sounds reasonable money for and aftermarket G60 IC IMHO.

    Good luck.

    Euro Car Parts

Make sure you buy the rad from ECP, its very good qualit although the cooling fins tend to destroy themselves even if you dont touch them lol.

Can anyone tell me what model/engine size sprinter intercooler I need to get.

Euro Car Parts (should have guessed!) thanks.

The Sprinter intercooler is easy, there's only one they make, they're about 145 ish delivered inc VAT from Mercedes new. If they get all ar$y I've got the part number somewhere at work.

    EDIT: Mercedes part# 9015010701

Right - almost a year later it's time to dig this thread out again, because I still need to obtain an intercooler for my 16V G60 project.

The front of the car is completely in bits and I am quite happy to modify any of the front parts, weld some brackets up, and so on. So whatever intercooer I get, it doesn't have to be something that just slots straight in.

There are so many options for intercoolers that it seems difficult to know where to start. But the options I'm considering / have considered are:

    1. Merc Sprinter intercooler. Well I was interested in this one, but after reading tt's comments about them in some other old threads (done a fair bit of reading this morning) I get the impression that truck / commercial vehicle ICs aren't ideal for various reasons.

    2. Whatever I get, it's going to be better if it has the inlet and outlet port on opposite sides. Or so I understand. And it makes sense if I have the G60 on one side and T/B on the other.

    3. I could buy the expensive Radtec G60 intercooler and radiator assembly for around 700 quid.

    4. Or the G60 intercooler 'upgrade' that Allard do. At 360 quid (or it was back in January this year anyway) it sounds good value. However, G40 Al's comments above about the Allard I/C are noted. I'd raise this issue with Allard if I wanted to go with them.

    5. On eBay, I've seen a lot of Escort intercoolers. One in particular looks rather nice - I think it's an aftermarket one:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4583078 667&fromMakeTrack=true

I've seen it suggested on here several times that these Escort I/Cs are worth considering (I think maybe tt suggested it?) and it looks like the sort of thing that could fit low down behind the bumper.

Yeah, that's another thing. I'm not sure if I want something long and narrow to locate far down or if I want something sort of large like the Allard G60 item. Do you get restrictive flow around the radiator or IC if you have a big rad and massive I/C behind each other...?

There are loads more interesting looking items on eBay. I don't want to be a cheapskate but I get the impression that something for around 100 quid or less (like that one on eBay above) could be just as effective as a brand new 600 quid custom job. On the other hand I'd prefer to pay for the best I can get now rather than have to pull it all to bits several times later.

If that Cossie I/C doesn't go much higher than fifty quid, should I just buy it anyway to try out? Is it quite easy to 'plumb in' an intercooler by buying standard lengths and angled bits of tube?

The engine is now in the car at last and I've got some cash waiting for the right I/C!

    Cheers

It`s not bad to plumb in an ic if you`ve got a selection of bends and fancy a go at welding. I`ve been looking for some 60mm diameter bends in thin wall steel to have a go at building some custom piping but haven`t found much.. Samco stuff is top quality.

RichGit was putting out nearly 300hp using a Merc sprinter IC?

Should get off my bottom and sort my s2 ic out really [:$]

I run the normal rad and the temps aren`t bad at all, barely see over 100c on the oil tbh..

My injectors are on their way [:D], think G-Works may have some spare 420cc`s if you haven`t bought any yet?

Right, I've decided that I want to get a brand new I/C, and I'm going to go for the Allard I/C at 360+VAT I think because that seems good money for a brand new unit (that's the amount quoted for a Golf MK2 FMIC copy).

I like the look of the Radtec FMIC / radiator / fan package:

    http://www.radtec.co.uk/gallery.php?category=2

But this is 630+VAT. It's a lovely looking unit and I'd pay the extra for it if I felt it was worth it, but to me it seems like you're just paying the extra for a radiator. Also, I don't understand why both I/C ports are on the same side.

I don't know what Allard's 'Rallye' FMIC looks like yet but apparently it can be made to my own spec. I guess my safest bet is to get my I/C made very close to the original G60 FMIC spec in terms of port locations, etc.

    Any further tips?

  9. Hi Trev
I am using a, cough, Citroen Xantia td intercooler in my mk1. Had to take some off the height but may fit a mk2 OK, inlet and outlet on opposite sides.
Worth a look as you can get them for buttons.
    Steve.

If you`ve got the money Trev, a genuine Rallye FMIC is the way to go, I`d definitely fit one of these if funds allowed.. You may have to fit the Rallye/G60 radiator as well or you may be able to get away with the 16v one?

My 16v rad is up to the job of cooling the engine, just depends if it will fit with your IC?

German ebay could be your friend for a Rallye FMIC.

Also check www.the-corrado.net and do a search. Many of us Corrado boys have looked at many options for front mountyness

Hi mate, just been reading through your thread.

Is your Golf a LHD ?? Because if its noti'm prettysure you'llhave trouble getting a Rallye FMIC and Rad in there ...... depends where you've mounted your alternator, which would get in the way of the U-bend. The Golf limited used a Rallye FMIC and Rad but being LHD didn't have that problem. I know this because there is a guy on the Corrado forum doing a 16VG60 conversion, think in the end he went for a www.proalloy.co.uk one, because the in and outlets are on the right as you look into the engine bay ....

As for the radiator, i'm having the same trouble. I want to put a Rallye FMIC in my Corrado, and as i've just moved to a hotter country i need a bigger Radiator in there......... the Corrado G60 Rad is tiny, the Corrado G60 with Air-Con is too big to go behind the FMIC, its 675mm and could work for you ........

I've tryed to get a new Rallye Radiator (630mm) from VW but they are now obsolete. I've been told that a Corrado VR6 radiator is the same until reading this thread, someone said it wouldn't fit !! ??

I don't think the 16V Rad will work in yours either cos the top hose is on the left and would hit the Charger. G60 Rads (and the VR6 Corrado) have the in and outlet on the right ....

Hi mate - Yeah after reading through some threads on a Corrado forum a while back I came across this discussion and realised that I too cannot use a Rallye FMIC either, because my alternator is underneath the supercharger (it's a RHD car, hence alternator has to go underneath the G60).

What I'm thinking of doing is getting Allard to make me something that fits into the Rallye FMIC profile, but is twin-pass, i.e. both ports on opposite side of G60 (on the right, as you say).

Interestingly Radtec already offer such a thing off the shelf, but it's simply too expensive. But then again, it's a nice FMIC and rad solution in one, that all fits together properly, for around 700 quid (I'm sure you've seen the one I'm on about).

Thanks for the link by the way mate - Proalloy are people who I've not previously considered. :)

With regards to using a 16V radiator. I've not tried fitting mine yet, but I think that Keithmac on here is running his 16V G60 (same setup as mine) with a 16V rad.

Hi mate, yeah i thought i read that he had a 16V Radiator, guess it fits some how !!?? I'll be keeping an eye on your progress it looks amazing in the other thread of yours. I had a pic of the ProAlloy one fitted to a Corrado G60, here you go ..... notice the Rad has been moved over to the right ....
