Stealth have them for 620.. or C&R do a stage 1 for 560?? Anyone know anywhere else or had any experience with these? cheers
As before.... Off the shelf headwork is both expensive and not entirely good value. If you have a head already or can afford time without the car then get it done by a recommended local engineer. Porting and polishing is the only aspect that proven race preparation experience will benefit you. There are plenty of smaller garages that have been experimenting with golf 16/8v headwork and you won't be losing 650 on a simple porting job. Do some homework, ask around. Where do you live?
Thanks yet again jc.. I'm based in the South West (Bristol/S Wales).. I'm not in a major rush to get her back on the road and I'd rather pay someone to work on my original head! I've done a few head swaps before but not a multi valve.. bit nervous about the whole hydraulic tappet set-up tbh
bit nervous about the whole hydraulic tappet set-up tbh Easier than mecanical tappets by a long way, fit and forget!
You'll probably find all these big names get theirs done by the same bloke anyway............. Then double the price I bet if you go to a race meeting/sprint/hillclimb event and ask around who does decent head work you'll find someone who'll do a head a lot cheaper Edited by: G_V_K
The big names are all around the 600 mark Made a big difference to my 1.8 valver.....torque and power increases. With exhaust good set up and a 4 branch you should see about 170+ Nice revvy power that won't break the bank Ian.
I wouldn't say use a TSR head personally, the quality of the work is there but the price is pretty damn high and there are betterly designs out there IMO.
or ask about at your next local meet, some vw enthusiasts do their own and for a decent wage might do yours! still less than tsr etc
Cheers for the info.. Last year I had my MGB head machined to a stage 2 spec by a company in Oxford called Oselli.. they specialize in classic Porsche and Astin Martin manly.. made a massive difference.. Gave them a call the other day on the off chance and turns out they've done quite a few Valvers (not unlike the k-series heads apparently).. So I dropped mine into them this morning for a make over I'll post some pics and figures when I get it back next week!
Mad 20V......the heads as Gary has said previously and from my own knowledge is done by the same person AmD TSR BR Motorsport Stealth etc all use the same bloke and are all priced close to each other. There are no different variations on head work for the valver unless you are relying on a DIY approach. The head is the most important part on a valver so getting it right is a must.I wouldn't risk a unknown DIY approach especially for proven results and reliability. TSR were actually cheaper than AmD BR etc. Ian
Oselli........... now there's a name I haven't heard for a long time. I'd be more than happy letting them do any headwork, their work is excellent and they've been around for well over 20 years, you have nothing to worry about with them.
if you don't mind me asking-how much are they charging?? looking into getting mine done but if its too much then i shan't bother. anyone heard of a company called QEP in brighton?
Oselli - very respected name - I would think you would have no problems at all - famed for more classic car tuning but highly capable IMO. Be very interested to hear how you get on / pricing etc Valvers are getting close to classic status anyhow....LOL...approaching 20yrs old Cheers Rob
Had a good chat about the 16v head with them.. there's not a great deal of 'porting' that can be done within the already well flowed chambers, other than knife edging the main vain and smoothing out any casting marks. Comparing it to a modern k- series head I could see what he meant!! They charge around 600 to fully clean up an MGF head to race spec, and the gains are big! But paying them to spend hours cutting out every little nik of a KR head is hardly worth it for such small gains! Initial costs for my head are 25 for a re-face, and then bringing it upto 300 to match all the inlets and outlets, triple angle all the valve seats and valves (this is where the biggest gains will be), clean up the chambers and then rebuild it. This also includes pressure testing, crack testing, vibration tank wash/ degrease.. etc. They,re well worth a chat if you need any kind of machine work done to any level! Oselli
Sounds like a great deal Ewan, are you going for any more engine modifications as well? Pete Edited by: Peter
300 for that work and a rebuilding it for you is a bargain! take his hand off before he changes his mind
