ive got a mk1 with everything needed to get my twin 40s on, however i have not done this before and am having trouble figuring out how the linkage kit fixes on. they are DCOMs which i have been told will present no difficulties, but looks to me like the design may cause some fitting issues. pictures of yours fitted would be very helpful, as would any information relevant to this topic. cheers peeps.
have you got pics of the linkage m8? im on dcoe's and ive never seen a linkage like mine before... you can see 2 springs on the left carb, and the original throttle cable runs through a bracket on the right carb... anything else you wanna know?
cheers guys, that was a lot of help as i have got the same kit as riley. just need the money to get them put on and set up now, what will i be looking at, around 150?
i paid about 120 quid for a set. this included Full carb strip down and rebuild (they were rusted to poo!) new jets Full Rolling Road set up 4 hours intotal work worked away with 164 bhp, 135lb/ft
have to get on the phone soon and get some quotes then, and then pay on the trusty but over used credit card . Anyone know what power will be increased by? standard mk 1 1.8 with a magnex system and standard 1.6gti downpipe. around 145bhp sound about right?
Velly I take it I'd have to mod the alternator adjustable bracket if I am to run k&n box filters? Room looks a bit tight round the left hand trumpet?
im down south devon way mate. you sure about that gregs, the mk1 1.8 gti is 118bhp as standard and have been told i should expect around 20 -30 extra brake by a mate who knows a fair bit about cars, he put an mi16 running twin 45s into his pug. that flies by the way, rolling roaded and it was 195 bhp!
Riley, I thought it was 112bhp? Any advance on 112? I don't doubt that your mate knows a lot about cars but the Mi16 responds a lot differently to carbs than the DX does. 20-30bhp is roughly 18-27% power increase from a change of fuelling alone (going on 112bhp as standard). That would mean that the K-Jetronic injection and the inlet manifold on the DX are incredibly badly designed for the task. The Mi16 and (Vauxhall) C20XE engines seem to give the best gains from sidedraughts (or throttle bodies) on a standard engine, with the VW crossflow engines trailing by some distance and the VW counterflow engines behind them. Of course, you may see big increases in power but these are just general trends. Any figures you get will suffer from the usual problems - how accurate are the rollers? - what are you taking your "before" figure from? the book figure? - how have the curves changed? - do you just have more peak power and losses throughout the rest of the rev range)? It'd be great if you could get some "before" plots from the same rolling road where you have the carbs set up. That way you'd really know just how the carbs have affected a standard engine. I'm not trying to put you off, just trying to be realistic so you don't get disappointed. I very much doubt you'll see a genuine 145bhp from carbs alone.
QUESTION! My 1986 mk1 gti 1.8 cabby engine layout looks alot different to the gti's shown in these pics. For example my spark plugs are not situated through my cam cover. whats the difference between these gti's and mine.
