yeh they will look nice, ive got 17"'s on mine, handles well ish, apart from on slippy round abouts tim
Alot of people mate, quite a few people think biggest is best but IMO i've seen the best golfs with 15's/16's with thick fat tires and alloys. BBS are always a winner. So remember a car with 15's looks nicer always than a car in the ditch at the side of the road as it wouldn't turn on it's "bling" 17"ers
I don't like the sound of the ditch. Is there nothing that can be done, suspension wise or stiffening up the ride? Surely there's the same amount of grip with 17s, same width yeah? Might sound really dense of me but don't understand why 17s would make car handle different than 16s? I fear I have made myself sound really thick...
I thought the problem with 17's was clearance not handling. If you keep the same overall size ie instead of 195/50/15 go to 195/40/17 then it is essentially the same tyre with a lower profile sidewall (OK 1/2 an inch taller and adds 2% to your speed vs speedo reading, but not that different) What is the handling issue? Is that not related to using much wider tyres associated with 17's, ie 205, 215 etc
17s are heavier than 15s, so the unsprung weight is affected, this makes a big difference in the "feel" of the car. On 17s you will be more suseptable (sp) to tramlining which I think is what Mk2golfboy is on about, not that this should land you in a ditch unless you haven't any arms! Smaller wheels allow the car to accelerate more freely. I had 17s on my Mk2 before the 15s and the power delivery was very flat after about 4500 rpm. On the 15s it revs right round in any gear. Better mpg with small wheels, better proportioned on a Mk2, cheaper tyres, quicker, better handling (with the right susp set up) what more can I say.
Theres no doubt that my 17x7.5s on 205/40/17 tyres have a bigger rolling radius than a 15" wheel! My tyres are tucked up into the arch and the front of the car is higher from the ground than other rallyes with 16s they also weigh a flipping ton, unlike the porsche 16s which are going to replce them soon (admittedly slightly cancelled out by adapter weight). Heavier wheels make your shocks work harder to control their movement - therefore your shocks will not have as great an effect for a given stiffness.
btw I do actually like that wheel design, but even from an aesthetic point of view, I think 17s are an inch too big on mk2s
See it's strange cause I think 16s look far too small at a time when everyone except us in Golf land is sticking 18s and 19s on their cars 16 seems a little small. Suppose the best thing to do is go to a show and see cars with 16s on and see if there are any wheels I like.
Mate do what you want, don't change your mind because some people prefer 15's if you like them in 17's get them in 17's i think thy will look great!
Fact is he can obviously do what he want's although he's got to be prepared to have some other work done. Might have to have your arches rolled. Change in suspension. And also think about the weight of the wheels they will look nice but they will change the feel of the car making it feel more sluggish when turning. HOWEVER it will stick to the road like hell with tires that big.
what do you think of the pic in my sig, they're 17s looks good, but my car definately accelerates quicker, brakes better and handles better on the 15s, i wouldnt go back to 17s!
Oakgreen that is pure sex. Totally the look I want. The arches are already rolled, guy had a 17s on before he got some Steffan cups.
