    Hi,

I thought Id grease the components of my window regulator (mk2 8v electric windows) problem is that I have snapped the cable which was rusty and fraying anyway. I just need to know what to do to fix it. Do I replace the cable or do I have to buy a new regulator thingy.

Its the front drivers window if that is relevant.

    cheers

Electric and manual regs are different. Not sure on prices, but, bound to be from VW. Better second-hand.

Thought GSF would do them but no luck. If I buy second hand arent the cables likely to be frayed on those too. Is there no way of replacing just the cable with a fresh one. Anyone got any experience of doing this?

wind window down till you can see the 2 bolts holding the glass to the regulator, remove these & unhook the glass. Grab hold of it and lower it down inside the door.

Then you just have like 6 bolts/nuts holding the regulator in, and an electrical plug! The only issue you may have is the plug on the regulator wont match the VW one, you'll need to get a little creative with some spade connectors is all :)

Oh one last thing, the GSF regulators are for doors with the single piece glass, not the earlier 2 piece!

single piece suits me fine, just wondering would it be better duct taping the glass to the frame at the level when you see the bolts or is it just easier dropping it into the door once unbolted? just thought it might be easier when bolting it to the new reg

either way is fine, you can easily lift it back up thru the holes in the door when it comes to bolting it back up. Or you can just take the glass out, but to do that you gotta remove the outer window slot seal at least.

that membrane has to be thjere or you'll get water in your car, bin it and fit a fresh one made of of some decent plastic. I stick mine down with waterproof duck tape, and use a shorter piece glued along the bottom edge and tucked in to divert the worst of the water into the bottom of the door before putting on the main sheet like so:

Fitted the Gsf part yesterday, its great everything works fine had to cut the plug off the original and mated it to the gsf motor. The window faintly sounds like it is scraping something as it goes up is there anyway of adjusting it?

Also my old window motor works fine is that any use to anyone?
