mk2 rear bracket has 3 mount holes, mk3 has 1 mount hole. also several different mk2/3 mount brackets, small & big block differ, as do 4 pot and 6 pot brackets. last of all on the MK3 the 020 cars have a different bracket to the 02a equipped cars. Going on what danster has said it seems there are no difference in bracket heights in relation to block hole positions to top of mount face position, which narrows things down considerably. now we need to check height from subframe->chassis mounting to top of engine mount on both mk2 and mk3, plus also check that all MK3 rear mounts are the same height. there are lots of part numbers for these but I assume the difference is in the type and stiffness of mount rather than heights
That distance on a mk2 golf subframe with the 3 bolt rubber mount is 130mm. Obviously uncompressed as it is out the car with no engine weight on it. May drop around 10 to 15mm I imagine when engine weight is applied.
So we're pretty convinced that Mk2/3... no difference in height, just design change? Stumbled over these pics:
measured a B3 GT "35i" 1989 just a few hours ago, 60mm the subframe mounting screws are wider apart and at an angle towards the back, the rear ones seem the same, but didn't measure them. also confirm the 1112mm width on the strut tops.
just realised.. the rear subframe mounting bolts on a Passat should be a bit wider apart than the golf ones, and, as the ARB mounts are directly behind them, the ARB doesnt easily fit the golf subframe, as already discovered on another thread.
sorry to drag this back up but i found out today that my statement way back on page 1 is incorrect, the corrado VR6 has its own subframe that is specific to the corrado! from what I read the rear mount bracket is slightly shorter so as to give more clearance between the engine and the bonnet. does anyone have a corrado vr6 subframe to measure?
Hello all, just to update this thread I have a Corrado VR6 subframe 'in stock', and confirm this measurement is 33mm on the Corrado VR6 subframe, so it will drop the engine 5mm might be worth checking the same measurement on the gearbox side as well, see if its only driver side thats dropped or if its both sides...
Sorry to bump this, but I have a (stupid) question: I have a mk3 gti 16v subframe, whats the counterbalance weight for?
not stupid question it's to damp out vibrations at certain revs or speed though it can easy be remove without any problems
It just looks like extra weight to me! Lol. I have a mk2 and a mk3 frame so I'm going to just swap all for mk3 and be done with it and go 5 stud wide track
only thing with mk3 frame is you got to swap out all the mounts and engine brackets, but apart from that straight swap
