a dying hall sender will send the rev counter a bit nuts, which also matches the symptoms. was it crazy just cos the revs really were messed up or did the rev counter go way higher/lower than what the engine was actually doing?

the hall sender is a module inside the dizzy (distributer) if the revs aint bouncing about like a bluebottle on speed then cast that asside

ideally you want a fuel pressure test done, confirm if you do indeed have a low pressure situation. Do you notice the main pump gets louder now & again?

i cant really notice if it gets louder or not, the exhaust sound is to loud. i will take it to a garage to check the fuel pressure. if i make it there lol.

i hade my feul pressure checked when i hade my pump problem and the pressure was ok around 5 bar,he said the pressure can be ok even if the pump is goosed, its the volume of fuel delivered,he likened it to a hose pipe running smooth and constant the breifly standing on it,the pressure and delivery change and ends up spluttering, anyhow i changed it and it was fine, put a new lift pump in too
dont buy a second hand lift pump, you dodnt know what your getting, you cant just test them by running them, mine was broken but it ran and thats what caused my h/p/pump to go,buy brand new and do regular filter changes

done a bit of testing today. pulled the injector out, bypassed the pump relay and lifted the betering head flap.

at first fuel started coming out fine, after a few more attemps of lifting the flap i either had noting coming out the injector or splattering of fuel.

would this suggest that its the main pump thats the problem? although i should really change both pumps?

well id do the lift pump first as its cheaper, if problem persists then do the main! have a look on ebay new ones come up now & again for good prices. just make sure its a k-jet MK2 one and not digifant (MK2 8v kjet one is same as 16v fyi)
