Im looking at doing an engine conversion (currently a 1.8 8v) for my Mk3 Golf. I'm not sure whether to go for 2ltr 16v, G60 or VR6.I have spoken to TSR & they suggested the 2ltr 16v & that's it really.

The Golf Mag March 2004 Q&A (supported by C&R Enterprises) replyed:

There is absolutely no point in fitting a 2ltr 16v as it's a pathetic unit & what is the point in retro fitting a VR6 as you can already buy the car with one fitted from the factory? This also goes for the 2ltr 16v in this respect, but we wouldn't buy one of those anyway.
We would either look at a G60 or the most logical solution the 1.8T....etc

Oh dear i feel a Tubthumped moment coming on

i'm assuming C&R charge mega for the 1.8T route, and so feel the need to make you feel inferior so you pay for it? :)

Tub phoned C+R to order discs and pads and more or less had to argue with mr Cresswell to sell him the bits HE wanted

Won't go into the bodged up mess they called 'servicing' my car prior to me getting it [:x]

Cresswell is a pr1ck. I've argued with him before because I didn't want to do something his way which would have cost nearly 3 grand, instead of my 400.

    RR figures are his favourite.

Told me id be "lucky" to get 130BHP from my 2L 8v & he regularly quotes the 9A 2L 16v with KR head as a maximum of 150BHP/150lbs/ft! [:$]

1 thing though -- we know my car is fast, so is GVK, and Barny and Ian B etc... etc...
and when have you EVER seen a fast C+R car on track!??

    What a prick!

If you ring up for parts, ask for Roy. Top bloke and doesn`t try to sell you anything you don`t want! I`ve been dealing with him for 2 years now and never had a problem. Wouldn`t go anywhere else for mail order.

Most of Cresswell's answers in his Q&A column are bollocks as well..... and half of them even simple things that anyone with a bit of knowledge about VW's could solve!

Had to laugh when i saw the "steering rack mounts" DIY on page 80 as i just had to change mine for an MOT the day i got the Mag (typical) & payed 15 labour for the drivers side which if anyone knows is i right git to change when the engine & everything is still in there (& still Hot [:$] ) so i was quite happy with that.

My conversation with the squeaky shit went a bit like this:

Tub: 'Hi, i want a vibratechnics front engine mount for a MK2 Golf'

Creswell: 'Are you aware of vibrational transferance issues to the cab and the slight discomfort you will feel at tickover.'

Tub: 'Not really concerned with that.. more concerned that i do a few track days and my engine rips genuine VAG mounts apart in a couple of months.'

Creswell: 'Oh right, what power are you putting through the engine?'

Tub: 'About 170 from an ABF.'

Creswell: 'Thats very very good.. but you must have major fitting and clearence with that engine block being too tall for the MK2.'

Tub: 'Errm.. not, fits perfect and doesn't knock or catch anywhere.. and goes like stink! Would you like my debit card details now?'

But DO NOT ask about the brake conversation i had with him... [:x]

Hmm yeah i thought it was a bit odd , i can think of worse engines in the VAG range. He did not say why it was pathetic unit . Perhaps its a misprint ? dunno how tho [:$]

I think it is not as good as a Vauxhall 2.0 16v unit or a mi16 unit and this is common knowledge. But the mk2 as a car Far better that the crap that came with these engines so i think it stick with it for a while [:D]

When i have spoken to him in the past the advice seemed ok.

Also, why fit a G60 when it puts out the same power as a decnt 2l 16v, is notoriously unreliable, and needs a charger rebuild at 400 every 40k or so? I say we all Email "The Golf", and ask for someone else to do the column. Like 800g's, Prof or Golden.

But yes, tell us about the brakes, Tub....... [:D]

I live 10 mins from C&R, and Mr Creswell lives very close to me, often see him about in his MK2, and some of his staff in the local gym.

Never had a problem with them personally but everytime i have been i have known what i wanted before i got there, i will still chuck a fire bomb through his window if anybody wants me to though [}:)] [}:)] [}:)]

I am having my ABF fitted in March so i might just sit infront of his house all night and rev it
