Also a couple of months ago I bought this - its identical to mine (same year, colour, number of doors) however this one has had a few modifications which I've been spending most of my free time removing in an attempt to put it back to standard. Story goes, about 15 years ago I used to go to all the local meets, and this particular MK2 used to frequent the meets also. It was a really nice car back in the day but sadly its been laid up for about 6yrs and it's been left to go to shit in that time as the owner had a few things going on and the car took a back seat. I saw it on shpock for a reasonable price and it turns out it was still owned by the same fella - after a bit of discussing I got the car for a really good price including a load of spares. Here it is being loaded onto the truck the day I got it:
Got it home and started to assess what I've let myself in for - almost immediately I broke it and took 2 days to get it to run again, after removing all the bolt on aftermarket tat and replacing everything that was missing under the bonnet it runs spot on. Here it is on day 1:
And here it is today awaiting being put back together after replacing the front mount/bracket and most of the cooling system. Next up is to strip the interior and dash out and replace the heater matrix as that's gone, then need to attend to the massive holes in the floor pan....
I sold pretty much all the aftermarket stuff off the car and got pretty much my whole outlay £ back which was a result. I did hold onto the wheels - 7x15 ats turbines which after a good polish and 4 new tyres are ready to either sell or run on my MK2 for a change, not decided yet
One of the reasons I couldn't pass up on the new MK2: plenty of history dating back to early 90s including all the old tax discs etc
Cheers, I don't think I'd have bothered had it not been for the history, my plan is to restore it then sell it on so will need the provenance come selling time!
Really must come over and see you and the cars soon, it's been pretty mad as usual in my life at the moment, nice had a run out to Haworth though, hope didn't get stung in the cafe at bottom of main street like I did last year, nearly £20 for 2 drinks and 2 cakes!!
Yes defo Dave, I've had my head down myself studying for exams but hope to make some free time now the weathers picking up. If you have a spare couple hours next Sunday morning there's a thing going on at brighouse then the following Sunday it's Elsecar at the races (donny racecourse)
This weekend has been a tale of two halves, firstly the nice half - ride out to a local meet with my mate in his minty mint MK1 GTI: Then the nasty half - took the carpets out the other MK2 and had a poke about, leaving half the underside in bits on the drive haha Need to try get a price to sort as I dont have the skills, that will determine where I go from here (sell as is/break and scrap/press on and save it)
Don't sell them they are so nice ,found a set on an auction site in my country $2500nzd and they were rough as they had been on a JDM car and very pitted. Anyway moved on to 7x15 RH wheels and found a set for less than scrapper recycle price, seller said they were very rough and it turned out to be no more than cracked clearcoat and they were straight. Used them on 2 other cars then sold them on my mk3.
Will see what happens, I've got them advertised for what I feel is a fair price with the condition and 4 brand new tyres, only had dimwits offering tuppence for them so far so they can stay for now ay least. In orher news, someone took this pic of my car at a local meet which I quite like:
Not posted in here for a while mainly because not much occurring with my MK2, passed its MOT last month with a couple of advisories which I'll attend to over winter. Had a break from DIY today and rolled it out the garage for a clean.
Also I noticed the very faint outline of a sticker in the back window which had been removed a long time ago. Looks like it was for Madgwick Motorsport, so spent a few mins reading up on them which was nice. Might try contact them and ask if my car is known to them as it grew up in the same area they are based.
This one is tucked up for winter now. And back in July I bought this one, plan was to let my stepson help restore and possibly drive it but he lost interest in the idea. Plan is to sell it next year when I've done some more work on it and MOT'd it, then use the funds to restore the black one as my friendly MOT tester doesn't think it will get another test without some welding and stuff.
Hugely coincidental but I was browsing the out-of-my-price range cars on c+c today and spotted this: Not sure if this means your new shed might have been a press car but might be worth looking into
The black one is my keeper, its the red big bumper car that's the new arrival :-) Interesting on the number plate, I've got a lot of history with my black MK2 but nothing that goes back to the very early years so you never know.
