Glad you are doing all the work that you are as it helps me a lot!

As you well know Martin I have had the same problem! I know that you contacted the suppliers of the kit. Did they suggest contamination, which is what I thought was wrong with my set-up?
I am considering scrapping all of my old chemicals and starting again as I want to plate parts for my refurbishment!

Also. You mention blasting and 2-pack epoxy coating. Is this more expensive than powder coating? Is it a lot better?

    Kindest regards,
    Dave.

    Cheers Dave

The epoxy mastic is a bit more expensive but will not crack and flake off like powder coat does. When powder coat cracks it allows the water in to rot the metal underneath it.

You might say one step forward, two steps back, but its better than doing the cha cha going back to do it again and again. Push on brother it will look amazing, even if it takes a little longer.

    Some questions ..

Has the plating solution become contaminated?
How did you press the brake reservoir into the rubber grommets?
Is the heater natrix a tough job to do?

Observed the stereo wires... it took me several attempts to get my stereo wirihg sorted to get the head unit to fit well. I have several rca connectons and blutooth mic etc. I flip my head unit onto the dash and wire it, allows for easy install and removal. Im on the hunt for a decent antenna for the guard. I dont like the ones with sawcut teeth, any ideas?

    Love your work

I believe it is contaminated. The only other thing it could be is that my power supply, the car battery and a coil of wire for resistance, is inadequate. I am reluctant to go out and spend more money on a suitable adjustable power supply because it would cost more than it would to just get them done at a platers.
So that's the option I'm now going to take.

My brake reservoir pressed in easily, I think due to me using the original seals off my original mc, rather than use new. I had to cut the raised part between the reservoir seals as per the guide by fasteddie

The heater matrix was easy to do. There are plenty of guides about to read before attempting it.
Main thing is make sure the new matrix is cleaned off before install. This is in order to remove the protective grease. Also make sure you get some material to replace the stuff that is on the direction flaps, as it will be missing or close to it.

Not cutting the seals. On a stubby mc there is a bit of metal that sticks up that needs cutting off.

Oic..matey, what suggestions do you have for cleaning up all the painted screws that were holding down the guard/wing around the engine bay?

I put the threaded end in a drill and then use wire wool or a wire brush. Then paint or plate.

Managed to get some more bits off a mk2 that was breaking locally.

Mostly brake line clips, but also both rear heat shields.
The rear most one, still needing cleaning

The one just in front of the rear one getting cleaned using a brass wire brush, a petrol based degreaser, and metal polish with fine wire wool.

That one cleaned and then installed but needing some more clips (on order)

Front ones cleaned and installed along with the brake line clips

The new side window turned up, but the metal piece was different! So I grew some, and got to changing it over. Grabbed a hammer and a block of wood along with a welding glove and face shield for safety.

    Winner

Same year window but different fixings. My one is the one off the glass.

New one done and onto cleaning with fine wire wool.

Marked the measurement on, with a whiteboard marker, for location.

Then stood the glass on edge and smacked it on after cleaning the rubber, with good old washing up liquid.

Cleaned up the plastic trim, with an all purpose cleaner, then got the heat gun on it. Half done the spoiler, not the best pic.

    Fitted

Door side trim treated and installed with new gti logo

    Rear bit to match

Whilst doing the drivers side, I noticed that on the new vw wing the holes are missing. Doh.
Guess it's because they are generic for all mk2 models. Will need to drill the fresh paint [emoji22] and then touch up edges.

Finished off the passenger side and then completed the wiper mechanism refurb. Then installed it.

1 for spare parts and one refurbished

Some good progress, especially as I got some more interior trim in. Grab handles, carpet foot guards, and c pillar trims.

    Martin.

Is there more than one type of heat shield for the bulkhead?
What is the part number of this shield?
The ones I have seen on ebay appear to be for diesels and look different!
    Ebay prices are around 45!

    Regards,
    Dave.

Had to quote it and say... VERY NICE!

And thanks, you reminded me that my side trims need a little attention, I will do that today. Some careful epoxy work to fix some of the broken clip holder.

Have you all the sill clips and brackets?

    THERE ARE TWO!!!
    That's why I am confused![:$]

It's is the bottom one I'd like to find.
When I looked on VAGCAT the top one is the one I have seen as being for diesels and what I found on ebay!

aye the upper is for diesels and 16v models, the lower is only used on pre-90 diesel and 16v. It was also fitted to the 90spec GTI 8v as standard since vw realised that the bulkhead paint on the pre-90 models was being baked off

lower one is 191803326A, it slips under the middle 2 brake line clips and underneath it uses the front 2 tunnel clips

    classic parts are doing them:

Rubjonny beat me to it,with the part number. Some good extra info too.

Cheers Paul. As I said mine is white on a 3.9final drive. Could probably look for a part number on it.

Before Curborough, as my mate came to mine, we got the heart of the beast onto the engine stand

As there are no modifications to make, and it's just a matter of tidying it up, it shouldn't take too long[emoji106]
