HI Nealey, I'm new to this so apologies for maybe doing this wrong. I have just bought this 180k i owner from new full history R reg GTi and I am looking for a multichanger for it and nicer alloys or do you think I should keep it original? Any advice would be good please. Nick

Erm, not exactly lol I'm still ironing out a few gremlins. Did you manage to solve the issues Hot Water?

Not a great deal has been happening on the mk2 recently but a fair few updates in the pipeline soon.

    Cheers guys

A few updates have been happening over the past couple of months, will have to document them sometime. Car is off to the bodyshop in the new year for a few bits but really I've just been driving it! Had every intention of fixing my daily today but ended up going for blitz around the country lanes in the golf instead lol

So its been a while since I last updated this thread, work and general life duties have taken more of a priority over the past few months meaning garage time has been slimmed (boooo! lol). I missed out on the CGTI trackday which I was gutted about however, in between all of this the mk2 has been progressing.

    In for paintwork

First up was the cars trip to the body shop. I've never really been into 'show' paint or anything (and still aren't), just wanted a presentable GTI but in the last few years the cars original paint has been deteriorating a little. Lacquer peel across the top of the wing had spread the complete length, various dents and dings adorned the drivers side, rust blisters had formed across the rear plinth and a bubble under the windscreen was sounding rather crusty when poked! In addition I had a small accident involving the garage wall, an open car door and an insufficiently applied handbrake. A few choice words were uttered that afternoon!

So what do you do? You spend your savings for a new daily on getting the mk2 painted of course lol

A good mate of mine put me onto Restomod and a top chap called James. I had the car quoted for just one side to be repainted last November but this later escalated to near enough a full respray!

Stripped the entire car down over christmas to hunt for any nasty surprises but fortunately everything was ok. About 3 days later I then had to put all the arches back on and use it as my daily for a week or so as my diseasal broke down. Then remove them all again for the paintshop lol Dab hand at removing and refitting 90 spec trim now!

The car was at Restomod for about a month in total:

    No more rusty wiper scuttle!

Collection day arrived and I was over the moon  James did a fantastic job, the paint is like glass. All that was left was to put it all back together again including a full set of G60 arches. The car hasn't been polished, waxed or anything in these pics but here's the end result:

The car still needs a full clean, polish and wax but I'm really happy with how its come out. There were a couple of casualties unfortunately, one was one of the roof moulding strips was knackered (Neal H sorted me out with a new, thanks chap) and the other was a rear smoked light snapped a stud (hence the poverty spec ones currently) but nothing thats not fixable.

    Hotgolf Gear linkage

Next update was the fitting of this beautiful piece of engineering from Hotgolf. I managed to snap one of the ends on the original ones so an upgrade was needed. I can quite honestly say this scores very highly on the list of best improvements to the car. It's fully stainless and has transformed the shift feel of the 020 rod linkage. Bearing in mind the lower lever ball of the gearstick shaft itself is knackered and I need to replace the nylon/rubber ball in the engine bay, this can only get better too!

Fresh out of the box - the machine work on this is a work of art, almost seems a shame to fit it!:

    Fully fitted:

    Interior updates

Couple of new additions to the interior including a leather Corrado handbrake lever:

and I refitted my OMP Trecento wheel. I keep flicking between the Rallye G60 wheel and this. The OMP is great to drive with but not being able to see the clocks properly ****es me off lol

    CGTI Dyno day

Which nearly brings me up to date. I just got the car ready in time for Toyotec's CGTI dyno session up in the London.

I've been trying to make this for ages and I've missed the past two due to the car being an ****! However this was to be the one! Leaving bright and early me and a mate made the 100 mile trip up early Saturday morning ready for the days action. I think we were probably the first ones there arriving about half 8 but by the time we'd grabbed some breakfast and wandered back down a few more faces had shown up.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day and was great to put some faces to the usernames (Chris Eyre, twolitrepinto, Dennis10, Tidymike, Geordiegar to name a few). Big thanks to Ed and all the guys at Garage Streamline.

Had to laugh at the number I'd been assigned after all the sh*t this car has given me lol

Bit shocked to see what was left of the infamous 'Joran' on the right :o

Rolled up on to the ramps. I'm not going to lie I was pretty nervous about this, my mate joked that he could see the colour drain from my face lol

Ed putting the car through its paces:

    So the result?

Pretty pleased with that, healthy standard power for a standard ABF

    Video of the run below:

That's all for now but more in the pipeline as soon as I get some free time to work on it!

    Cheers chap

Not a huge amount has been happening on the Mk2 lately. Weddings, best man duties and house DIY have taken priority and the bank holiday has shot by without a single spanner being turned! I did manage to give the ol' girl a quick blat around the local roads earlier though. Enjoying the ABF more and more every time I drive it, grin like a moron when behind the wheel lol

The manifold has been blowing a little for quite a while and its been on the to do list to sort. On closer inspection a few of the manifold bolts had worked there way loose covering the back of the bay in a thick film of soot and obviously hampering the engine a little. Easy fix that I must have missed during the shakedown check when the engine went in. Wish I'd investigated that before taking it up to London lol

Met Burni from on here the other day and had a good look around his track spec mk2, awesome car and top guy (cheers for the 020 linkage mate, owe you a beer). Left with lots to think about after nosing around that car.

Also popped over to local haunt Castle Coombe for spring action day. Some awesome motors out and its fueling my want to try some trackdays even more.

Hoping to get the gear linkage bushes replaced soon, clutch cable swapped for a manual one (auto adjust keeps sticking) and then begin to look at improving handling. It goes and stops very well but there's definitely room for improvement in the corners. First on the hit list is polybushed wishbones as the current rubber ones look rather perished - if anyones got any tips on replacing these please holla!

Been a while since I've posted in this thread as I've had nothing technical based to talk about, just been driving the mk2 as much as possible! Have clocked up a fair few miles this summer with a plenty of outings on the calendar remaining. A few bits of progression on the car documented below though.

After reading the 'How to make your valver breathe better' thread by Toyotec on here I've been wanting to have a crack at modding the airbox for a while. Picked up a couple of fluted air tips from ebay for a few quid and began smoothing the innards a little.

The wheels have always let the car down a bit due to the kerb marks, especially after having the some of the paintwork sorted so these went off to a local company near where I work.

    Take some scabby wheels

Fresh after refurb (note gf away for the weekend hence living room storage lol)

Lined up with a few other nice Mk2's at the Eurocartel monthly meet (Great southwest based club run by a couple of my best mates)

    Inters tickets showed up:

Followed rapidly by my starter motor deciding to have a hissy fit and an emergency one borrowed just before we were due to leave (cheers Jonesy!)

Inters weekend was a right laugh with beer and good mates a plenty! Met a few new faces from ClubGTI as well as some familiar ones - Eurocartel and CGTI's stands both looked jam packed and lively

Particularly like this pic from VW Vortex (courtesy Si Gray):

I was too hungover to take to the strip on Saturday but bright and early Sunday I got a few runs in!

Lined up behind a Mk1 I recognise but can't put my finger on who the owner is...

    (pic courtesy of Chuff)

(thanks to who sent this to me on Instagram)

So the first car I was up against? A bloody R8, twice! I got absolutely annihilated - plucky ABF is no match lol

Back home after an awesome weekend. Can't wait until next year again, Inters is always one of my favourites.

So next immediate steps? Handling and some more fettling under the bonnet. Quite a few bits and pieces on the list to crack on with and the parts collection is growing as and when funds allow. These turned up the other day (thanks Simon):

and I'm in the middle of working out a suitable catch can and possibly reinstalling the Mocal oil cooler again. All of that can wait until after Curby though, see you there!

A few small updates on the Mk2 :)

Not had a lot of spare time/weekends recently so spannering has been minimal. There's a fair list of winter improvements growing (top of the list auto clutch cable is doing my nut in lol) however the Mk2 has been on a few road trips since inters making the last of the summer B-road blasts.

A few weekends back myself and the GF popped up to the Retro Rides Gathering. Always a favourite of mine that I try and make every year as there's just such a diverse range of automotive porn, it's an awesome day/weekend out. This year it had moved to Shelsley Walsh hillclimb. New location was spot on, its come a long way since the Sparkford days.

    A few highlights:

    This thing was unreal...

    As was this:

And this? Well there are no words:

Managed to track down a copy of the latest VW Driver Inters report on the way home. Pretty chuffed to see a couple of good mates cars and my car on the cover

The weekend after was one I'd been looking forward to for ages - CGTI Curby. Having missed the previous one due to running issues I made sure I was ready for this one. I've never done a track day before so wasn't quite sure what to expect! Leaving bright and early at 4.45am the mk2 rinsed the 3 hour odd drive uneventfully and I arrived to see Dex and a few eager faces already at the gates.

A quick empty of the boot and straight into the line up:

Car of the day was this for me - I first clocked this at inters and had a good chat with the owner throughout the day. So clean and so purposeful. Love it

As for the mk2 I found it was so refreshing to be able to drive it hard and not worry about the hazards/connotations faced on the public roads. Confidence throughout the day grew, pushing the car harder and faster. Areas of improvement required for both car and driver lol

A couple of awesome shots courtesy of Mitch and Stella (thanks guys )

All in all the day was a big thumbs up - great to put faces to forum names and an awesome days driving, can't wait for the next!

    Thanks guys :)

Seems to a recurring theme this but been a little while since I've update this thread. Back towards the end of the summer I found both the jacking points had gone past their best. Stripped out all of the interior and sent the car off to a mate to get them welded up. Real nice job he did too.

    Mmm cornflakes:

    Chop chop grind grind:

    Much better:

That was back in September some time. I took some time out from cars to sort some personal issues (never let a women try to change you :thumbd:) but recently found some enjoyment with the mk2 again despite the shi*ty weather. Finally replaced the utterly crap auto clutch cable for a manual one which I've been meaning to do for around 3 years! It took 15 minutes to swap haha!

Also swapped the pedals covers and put some seats and carpets back into it. Filled up with fuel and did an epic round trip of three different coastlines in a day.

Unfortunately thats when a pretty ****e start to 2015 got worse. Someone braked heavily on the motorway causing a knock on slamming of anchors on a wet, icy road. The '12 plate golf in front stopped. I didn't... :thumbd::cry:

Drove it back home and it still seems to drive straight and ok. The freshly painted wing, original bumper, original grille and original bonnet are all toast. Slam panel, headlight and number plate are fubbard too. The radiator and G60 arch luckily seems to have gotten away unscathed!

Stripped it all down as soon as I got home and I'm hoping the damage is superficial - I would very much appreciate any advice here though!

Inner wing is bent but could be pushed back:

Top of the chassis leg took the brunt but the leg still looks straight:

This worried me a little but I THINK its just a cosmetic wound, not a ripple. There were no ripples further down the roof or anything.

Wing pushed right back ( I couldn't open the drivers door but now the wing is off the door seems to line up ok):

Inner shell looks all ok from eye around the A pillars etc:

So yeah, permission to say COCK! I need to fix the '12 plate golf bumper first (literally **** all damage in my opinion) but then hopefully I can get parts hunting for this again. It sounds lame but I feel as though I've lost a limb, its the first crash I've had and I'm gutted it was in this and not my crappy 306 daily

Aye that should fix no problem with a hammer and dolly or a bit of wood
    All looks superficial
