Hi All, Current engine standard but on Emerald management and magnex exhaust. 164bhp, 138 lb/ft on emerald's rollers. Time for a little bit more.. budget of about 1,000. Unfortunately I have mechanical skills or garage so would have to pay for the work to be done. any advice? cheers !
In addition to the above, if your budget would stretch to it a ported inlet manifold and a four branch exhaust manifold. Keep the standard cams and that should be quite a nice road engine...
reading about the hill climber head, you could get away with standard cams (ie standard lift) and still get a big improvement in flow) with mine i think ill go for flowed head and then a remap who remaps old digis though?
a real and broad range 10-15hp. Add some mild cams when more budget allows or save for them (300 or so) and only remap once. I would say 175 with the head alone and maybe 185 with cams if the engine is in good nick (but I wouldn't do cams then head, head first) BRM used to do an engine called the 180 which was a 2L bottom end with a decent head, schrick 268 cams, flowed inlet and exhaust manifolds, well put together and setup = 180hp (with a decent exhaust system). As you will be on better management, maybe another 5hp or so more would be possible and should be more driveable also / better torque curve. I had one of these which had 276 cams in it but was a bit worn, dropped a bit of compression, and on standalone management made 180hp.
I dont think a 4 branch will do much on such a mildly tuned motor - a tidied up stock one will be ok to 200hp IMO
Dont know anyone who does this anymore - Stealth may still have some contacts (ask them if Geoff still does work for them?)
somebody posted up a load of rolling road graphs of the various stages of tuning they had done with their abf not so long ago, may be worth having a read of that
It was Ess_Three I'm currently coveting the idea of Ti retainers, lightweight lifters, big valves, cams and a high comp 2.1 bottom end with Nissan injectors, remapped on standard management. It wont happen overnight, unfortunately, as it's going to cost a small mint but I have some of the parts already stored and waiting for more cash... Anybody need a Kidney?
Geoff Everett was the chap who did this work at AMD - not heard for some time if they still do this digi mapping
Back on topic... 1. What car is it in? The age of the car makes a bit of a difference, as to whether you need to run with a cat, and whether you can look at other fuelling options. 2. Is it a daily driver or a weekend/track toy. As already said, for either a daily or a weekend toy, getting the head reworked is a good place to start. It's not the easiest job to do, but it will give you real gains. Essthree put up a really good post on the history of tuning his ABF, and what's improved the power in his experience. Of course, if this engine is in a Mk3, the best way to tune a Mk3 is to start by throwing away the heavy shell, and put the mechanical bits in something a lot lighter.
