Agreed lol The reds stick together, all for one and one for all one Ray did do a Exceptional Job building the car. Was chatting to a fellow competitor recently and he said to me did I finish the build over the winter, when I mentioned it was built over 10 years ago now he was astonished. It's really stood the test of time well and with little use apart from myself and Gordon. With the updates in the pipe line I hope to take it to the next level. But the main objective is to keep the soul and originality of the car in place. No Turbos or wide arches allowed here!
Up the Reds! I'm the same all first class cars, couldn't split them. I said to Gurds a few years ago, if you ever sell it let me know. But by then I had Rays car. My plan was to build another MK1 once the MK3 was fully restored, but when it came up it was a no brainier. Had a handful of people say to me if I hadn't snapped it up they were going to.
I have to admit I did consider the berg route after chatting with Gordon, but we both agreed the shell was too good to do it too. And couldn't bring ourselves to butcher it. This will always be a honest little MK1 rather than a all out weapon like Gurds.
Also had these delivered today, start of the upgrades for this year. Not that it will help us go any faster tho. Some roll cage door bar protectors. The harness buckle keeps chipping the paint work on the cage and its gets regularly scuffed with my boots when getting in and out. Saw some fitted on Duncan's DJDubs excellent Orange MK1 Racer and thought it a good idea so ordered a pair up from GRP4 Motorsport, the MK2 Escort preparation company. Hopefully the start of a carbon fest
Mike, Grp4 in Galway are really helpful if you needed something custom, the Boss, Torsten is a true enthusiast. They've done various bits for us that were bespoke, and very reasonably priced.
That's good to know. I spoke with them at autosport this year, they had a good stand and the work on the escorts was first class. So much stuff available for them compared to VW's.
I looked into these and just couldn't justify the price for them when a bit of carbon firbre vinyl would do the same.
27+vat! Didn't think it too bad. After working with carbon fibre look vinyl for many years I can't stand the stuff lol I wrapped a Ferrari Race car in it once, looked good!
Thats still 65 for two bits of carbon lol Carbon Ferrari, looks amazing! I actually like working with vinyl, the newer carbon i have is a little thinner (4D) so easier to work with.
The Ferrari was done in a hybrid 3M vinyl. The customers friend worked for 3M so got it all free. Was trickier to work with than the DI-NOC stuff as it wasn't fully conformable. So needed a lot of work. I will post up a few more pics of it. Trouble is with the vinyl it's easily damaged, looks nice enough tho. My problem is with the metal buckle chipping the paint so after a few months the carbon vinyl would just look damaged unfortunately.
Fair enough, I think i will have the same problem also to be honest. Drivers side will be fine becuase i will be careful but if a passerger gets in and hits the cage with a buckle, we will have a problem...lol
It's easy to say I will be careful sat on your sofa with a beer in hand watching TV. But when sat in the holding area before the start of a race, adrenaline is pumping, your waiting to go out, then suddenly the marshal waves you out and you realise you haven't armed your fire extinguisher control box and you have to unbuckle to reach it the last thing you will think is better not damage the vinyl on the roll bar lol. Been there before in many situations like that, got the t shirt.
