Would the bulkhead not rust due to burned paint, from the heat from an unwrapped downpipe? I've seen it happen on a g60 mk2 with a standard downpipe and no heatshields on the bulkhead..
I dunno about that now, this guy has the car running like a dream, he's clocked up big milage across europe in it as well.. But the bulkhead is all rusty, where the paint has burned away..
bubbly paint on my bulkhead on the mk2 trackcar and its gone rusty, 4branch is very very close to it..... not saying heat was the cause but it could be.
I've seen a couple of cars with holes near the manifold/downpie area, think seb had one on his race car if I remember correctly.... not definative that it was caused by excessive heat but it is logical to make the connection considering the way in which rust is most easily formed i.e. unprotected metal + moisture + heat
Wasnt corrosion a problem on early mk2s a problem in that area due to the lack of a bulkhead heatshield which was later fitted by vw? I know the car Drunkenalan broke had gone in that area although cant say ive ever really noticed it on any ive broken
ye the 87 8v i had had a patch on the bulkhead just above the tunnel early on in its life due to the paint been burnt off
On the abf engines, there is a fireproof 'curtain' hanging down from the heatshield on the manifold to protect the rubber steering boot/driveshaft.. So if Vw thought there was a risk, i'd say possibly.. I'm sure i've seen a boot covered in downpipe wrap at some stage also..
