It all comes down to whats important to you - that extra second or two or a comfortable ride home - and there's no doubt also the comfort of the driver counts for speed also - personally for a trackday car then I'd keep some comfort. For racing....every tenth counts and could mean the difference betwen winning and loosing.....but thats also usually with good drivers who can lap consistently within half a second or less of their best time....if you cannot then perhaps some driving lessons may be a better bet than stripping everything out of the car
RobT .... agreed ! Comfort for me was: Race seat - 6.5kg Recaro SPG - expensive but worth it ! Motorsport steering wheel 4 point harness Tuition @ Brands Hatch - full day session - superb !
Here is the answer to if less weight makes a difference or not!!!!!! Bit over the top though funny http://www.nerocam.com/SCCTAP.asp
That link does not seem to work Type pitstopdevelopments into google Go to the forum Go to general forum page two about half way down go to Ultimate weight reduction for your G40. Long winded but worth a look i promise!!
If your stripping a mk2 theres about 20kg in the undersealunderneathand tar on the floor and bulkhead inside. I stripped all tar and under seal off my car and put in a bucket and was quite surprised how heavy it was its a complete pain to remove though. WhenI built 1st rally car based on a 1.3 I weighed all the stuff I didnt put back in trim seats carpet sound deadning etc I think it was about 75kg but then you have to add the weight of competition seats belts etc that you put back into car. Back when i did sprints in a roadgoing mk2 16v while doing a event on saturday and one on the sunday at kames I removed the carpets soundeadning rear seats on the saturday night and was about 0.5 sec faster on the sunday thats over 3 laps at 800m/lap. The standard 16v golf I sprinted fully trimmed was weighed at 1080kg about 100kg heavier than the book weight. My last rally car with all safety gear sumpgaurd etc weighs about 980kg I haven't weighed the new one yet should be a bit lighter again. Next weight saving to be of me recon there's at least 20kg could be lost much easier taking weight of car though. Edited by: g wagen
That was a great car. I think the main thing about how it went was how D could fling it about. No Fear! The windows were done when 1800. The difference was great. The 2L then went in & it didn't feel quicker, even though it was - less revvy etc. He had a weird 'box on it too, some derv box or summat, who knows...
Castle Combe on saturday 960kg fully race prep'd ibiza mk3, ~420-450bhp mid 1m18s laps on saturday on potenza S02's (buffed) 1127kg caged but road spec ibiza mk3, 410bhp, high 1m19s laps on eagle f1's. quite happy with the comparisons.. 127kg to loose or more I hope
Hello I'm new here and probably get flamed for this. Weight saving certainly will have an impact on performance in a straight line but also round corners as the centrifugal force will be lower as there is less weight to turn round the corner. So less weight should mean higher conering speeds. But dont neglect setup this can make such a huge difference. If you are running adjustable suspension go and get your car corner weighted and set up correctly (with you in it). You will find the difference mind blowing no amount of power or loss of weight can make up for a good setup. Rob
Balance Motorsport did some timings of the car before and after it was stripped. It was accurately timed at sprints at Lydden Hill inthe All Circuit Sprint Championship. Results are on this page along with some cool video clips http://www.balancemotorsport.co.uk/main.asp?sitepages=projec tcar It seems stripping the 205 saved about 1 and a half seconds in a 1 and a half minute run.
