I dont think Apple would ever go back to using Google data. What they will do is throw manpower and money at it, but they have been ignoring the developer community since it was released. This has been a number of months. I read somewhere that Google has in the region of 7000 employees working on map data alone. It will take them years to bring a mature mapping product to the table. I really cant see a simple solution.
I wouldn't know for sure, but I'd be surprised if the 7000 people allegedly working on Google Maps are all Employees in California. That article hints that there's a big part of the operation in Bangalore, which is full of Indian outsourcing companies. It's also possible that Google might have set up their own operation out there and hired local people. Anyhoo, there's more than one way to solve a problem, and that article you linked covers a few options. Short term people will use other apps. The fastest Apple Maps solution might be to buy another existing data set and integrate it with the app, either by buying data, or the company that owns it. Doesn't get you a jump ahead of the competition, but it stabilises things in the mid term.

Downloaded it for my 4, works great and has a couple of new features, especially in regards to sending pics. Need to be careful about how much you let it sync with twitter and FB is you're into them as it can make for a very large and messy contacts page. Should work even better on an S.
Yes, I ran it on my 4S before packing it away and sending to the person that brought it. It's very nice (apart from maps). Panorama works lovely on the 4S too!
I might do it next week then No worries about Facebook and Twitter, stopped using them ages ago as FB got me in trouble with the Mrs Old GF's ect ect!!! Apparantly it takes a couple of hours to complete ?
Hold your hats, this is pure genious!!!
Yup, it's running well on my 4S. Some nice new features. Stil in two minds about the 5 as all of my cars are wired up for the old connector. Might hold onto my 4S and switch to a cheaper contract. Or is that too sensible
I'm sticking with my 4s, With ios6 it's now an iPhone 5 with a slightly smaller screen and the old dock connectorlol Anyone know how to change the colour of the top bar when you view a menu screen for example? It goes blue, I wanted to keep it silver.
No this is an iOS 6 feature and application dependent. The iPhone 5 is a marvel of engineering. Suggest you get to an Apple store and just have a play with one Mat. I couldn't go back to a 4S now. Gemma's feels kind of archaic and heavy!
