realised today that my gear lever has a lot of play, forward and back.
its had all new link rods/bushes/ball at gearstick/short shift.

what could cause it,could it be the rubber ball thing (dont know name of it)
that sits in the bracket type bit(rectangular part of linkage)
and can u buy them from anywhere?
never heard anyone mention them before [:s]
    cheers :)

Yep, its going to be the rubber ball on the shift finger.

You can only get them from VW AFAIK. Not too expensive. They don't come as part of the kit, but often wear.

    They sometimes appear on ebay.

Tip : When you get one, coat it in epoxy resin, and it won't wear out again. That goes for you MK2 boys as well. If you coat the ball on the relay shaft, they last for ever

What are we talking about her Riley?

The Plastic Knuckles on the end of the rods that snap over the balls!!!

I've changed the same gear on mine as you say you have and its still crap. these are the only things i hav'nt done so i guess its these we need!

AFAIK = "as far as I know" [:D]

Take a look at this diagram.

You need part 11, which they call a relay lever.

Not sure about a white ball. The one I'm on about is a black rubber ball thats fixed to the metal relay lever.

If its white, it'll be a plastic part that is either part of the bushing kit of one of the ends of the rods.
The ends can break and give a bit of play. You have to replace the rod as the end are glued on permanently.

Or you could go for the TSR or missing links kit, which are metal aircraft style joints.

I got mine from vw as it didnt come with the gsf repair kit.

I also changed 42 as well as the rod kep slipping out of it

Why they did not put a spline bit in there i do not know as the rod end is splined and it was a right bastsy to setup.
