Good thoughts I hope! I panelled off the interior for added stiffness, anything that i felt would cause the chassis to twist. They are a snug fit and feel super tight. Its an added bonus that they neaten things inside too! Its a major U-turn for me really I'm normally chopping the crap out of it Cheers Gary, There's plenty of space for the rack, if anything I may need to nibble some material off the gearbox casing Here are some more pic's The purpose of concentrating on the chassis was pick up on all suspension anchorage / Stress points and at the same time produce a setup that would increase stiffness. picking up on front rear wishbone mounting bolts Ok, so moving onto the rear end Rear axle bolt on location Tying above onto the roll cage, All tubes were T45. Diagonal brace of above bars Second diagonal added Pic from Rear General Pics
After you filled in the spare wheel well did you need any underneath bracing for the lower rear panel? just that it normally attaches to the bottom of the well & when mine came undone it managed to rip the rear panel along the sides due to all the air going undrneath & hitting the panel. Cage looks great.
Thanks Mike!! , When I originally removed the spare wheel well I didn't re-brace the panel as the centre exhaust pushed up against it anyway. but over the last 2-3 years since its last use, the edges of the rear panel you mentioned have corroded. I'm not sure whether to replace the lower panel or cut it away ??? Hopefully gonna make some time to fix the rusty bits this week!
Take a quick look at the Reeves mk1 rear panel (in the Reeves build thread) as that has a small slice removed along the bottom which might help you a little bit. If i didn't have a brand new panel aready fitted to mine i was thinking of running a couple of larger round holes along the bottom half but decided not to in the end as it was a bit hardcore.
Yep, all good thoughts, and it's getting better! Hadn't thought of the panel stiffness from the inner panelling. Liking the front cross piece (engine bay) and liking the rear wishbone mount even more. Was there some inspiration for the wishbone mount off the ex-Kamei Mk1 that was on eBay USA not too long ago? Also liking the rear axle mounts bracing - had never thought how to achieve it, but so nice to pick up off there. The bar between the mid-inner wings I'm puzzling over ('thought provoking' !) since I've yet to visualise the stresses. Are you trying a mix of wall thicknesses/lightweight stuff?
Great cage matey, so wanna have something simualr to that down the line!! Do you have any colour codes for the three shades of vw motorsport blue, wanna get some vinyl for my mk1. Don't worry i won't be copying yours or pol's design! lol
Cheers Chris I didn't see the US mk1 feel free to put some pic's up if you want. The bar between the mid inner wings is mainly there to tie things up to the cage, lower strut braces are good but they still allow movement as they've nothing really to brace against other than the other side.I've heard the odd clonk from that area on fast tight-ish bends. I'm sure your remember the carvell scirocco having similar bars but without the horizontal bit. the bars for the top struts and rear section are T45 40mm OD 1.5 wall thickness The bars for the Rear wishbone mounts are 35mm T45
Thanks Dude! I did'nt bother finding out the exact codes, the white is Ford Diamond white the two blues are of French Origin, Just took a picture to paint shop and matched it. Check out VWM as Chris said a wealth of info on there!! cheers G
Hy. Congratulation for the car you haved built. Can you please send me a link were to read more information about the modification you did for the rear axle what are they doing good.
