Thanks mart! Took me ages to pluck up the courage and start welding, had been staring at the cage for months looking back...... chopping the inner rear 1/4's did'nt really save wieght, most of it was found in the doors, windows and panels. the angle grinder was and still is a good buddy I can't remember the exact price but it was around 450-500 in mild steel which is what i got or around 850 ish for lighter T45. The final cage weighed in at around 55-60kg. Hows yours going? all good i hope If anyones got any more pics of the cage feel free to add them
All credit to you infinity I know how it is to work outside and not in a Garage, its too cold atm [:^(] Like how you flipped the car on its side on page 2, thats ghetto
Have you done any more on those plans you mentioned for the front end when we spoke at the nurburgring? (Trying not to let cat out of the bag in case you are keeping it quiet ) I mucked up and replied to your post above on my thread instead...
Just doing some mock drawings and research at the moment, I doubt it will be finished this year[:^(] managed to get the front panel off... hopefully gonna start on it soon. managed to find some more build pics
From here on, the original build photo's came to a halt, as I probably rushed to get the car finished and the camera took more of a back seat. I have some finished pic's available. The car is currently going through another re-vamp so i'll be starting some more up to date pic's soon......
At last some progress.... Well i finally got some time to do some work on the mk1, so i'd thought i'd start my current build thread... The mk1's been off the road for a couple of years now, its been sitting on a good friends drive, I managed to get it back over to home with the help of some friends, First mission was to get it on axle stands. Front panel removed inner wing inner wing removed. Inner wing primed
Good effort, your article in golf+ mag inspired me to building my own track car, thank you very much!!! Also i take it yours doing a simular front end to Jelly's red mk1? Cheers Charlie
thanks guy's, positive comments always help with motivation........ Charlie, glad the car inspired you!! and thanks for the kind comments. I can't wait to get back in it. As for the front end, It may look like Jelly's at the mo but will be constructed in a totally different way. just trying to figure out the best way to construct a single piece front end.... Anyway some more progress from today. Inner wings given the first coat of paint. Scuttle had been removed for a while, but getting to those spot welds is a pain in the butt,
I'g guess the front end needs tubing up? I'd sort of thought about this along the lines of that front panel brace you may recall from New Forest Industries? Possible also weaved in with the general idea of this alumunium lower crossmember off a Group A Mk2: Anyway, just a thought in case it inspires. I'm sure you're up on this, but the MSA get shirty with shells involving integrated roll cage tube running in front of turrets. I've no idea why - the yanks seem to do it, but the MSA won't have it - so if it is stitched back to the cage, it just means it'll be non-MSA usable (though I assume it wasn't the plan anyway).
