Now i know the MK1 Golf is nice and light as standard, but how light have some of you guys managed to get your MK1s?? What did you do to get them this light? Cheers!
there was a thread about this last year sometime, cant remember the outcome but there a few very light cars on here... tring to find it right now. personaly I chucked the seats and carpets out of the mk1, went well but got a bit noisey so I put them back for now.
Anyone know where that thread is? I am looking to strip the car bare, no carpet, no sound deadening etc. Anyone know how much the dash board weighs?
Now I've found it there was more on the Mk2 but the theories apply.clickety I have never weighed a mk1 dash, I have a mk2 one though orgot how much of course....
The search button wont find a username called Infinity??? fthaimike - How did you strip it down to 640kgs??? Thats crazy light!!
its not really that much heavier in road form. to lighten it you basically remove anything that is bolted down and not needed. extra seats, dash, carpet, spare wheel, door cards. there isn't much to take out of the mk1 and it doesn't weigh that much anyhows, if you want to get serious, you could think about racing plastic windows as apposed to the run of the mill glass.
Yeah i am thinking that seriously as to use plexiglass windows etc. Even been looking at GRP boots and bonnets (but cant find a supplier for either as of yet). So you reckon it will be fairly easy to get the car into the 600kgs region? Would be sweet if i could as the engine work could thenwait as the standard engine should be perky enough and i could concentrate on the chassis and brakes....for now lol.
Im gonna have to search harder then....or hope that he catches sight of this thread! Infinity please tell me what you stripped to get the car this light??

The interior frame will stop the bonnet or tailgate flexing too much aswell.
Those prices are really reasonable, do you know if the tailgates are delocked, dewipered and debadged?
