Hi all, its a 2.0 Corrado 16v has got a dodgy locomotive type noise speeds up with revs, I have removed alt and water pump belt but still noisy. Have just fitted KR cams and new chain, noise was same before and after. please see link below http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8qrJ22tNfs
something is definately broken here, i had a similar noise in my 2L 16v 9a, it turned out to be just one big end bearing, it too sounded exactly like yours.camshaft noises are much quicker ticking. it knackered the crank and con rod which wrote off the bottom end. drop the oil and see if there is any metal particles in there. whilst there`s no oil in remove the sump and have a good look for play in any of the bearings. if it all seems ok then it`ll be a little end bearing, these are in the piston and it`s much better if this is the fault cos cranks are like hens teeth.
so I take it everyone agrees on big eng bearings. Can someone just summarise exactly what is involed in fixing this problem if it is a big end bearing. Also wondering what other bottom ends I could use as a direct replacement apart from the 9A. Hopefully this car will still work out a bargain after I fix this problem.
The bearings are easy to change - sump off, cap(s) off, shells in. However if the crank is damaged there's not really much point just doing the bearings... You can use - 6a, ACE, 9a, ABF or (although it would then make it a 1.8 not 2.0) a KR bottom end
thanks that gives me some options, although Im not sure what I would be looking for when checking the crank, also are all the bearings accessible without removing the engine?
If one of your crank bearings are gone you may even have piston edge/cyl head conntact Equals more damage If thats the case then complete second hand engine is your solution
You're looking for score marks and pitting mainly, and from the above reply the same on the cylinder bores... Shells can be changed with the engine in situ by removing the sump and anything in the way
is it worth changing the shells to avoid further damage as a quick fix whilst I look for a replacement? Maybe even giving me a chance to rebuild another block. Atleast I coild still have use of the car?
May have damaged the Crank too if you've been running it like that. Total Rebuild i think while you have it in bits.
I wont need to remove the engine to replace the shells so can someone please clarify if that is worth doing to prevent or minimise further damage as I need the car on the road whilst I search for a suitable replacement block.
Depending on the state of the crank, it'll make it quieter but for how long is anyones guess, could be 5 minutes, could be 5 months...
Look at the 1800 one in your garage. That's good, apart from the journal that's all scored up (although it's not disastrous, it wasn't worth rebuilding without regrinding it first).
Whats this noise Update dropped the sump today to check out the state of the crank etc... also see pics of metal bits found in the oil. can someone please clarify where the bits have actually broken off from?? is this fooked? penny wasnt in the sump thats just there for size comparison.
Looks like bits of shells and some plastic bits, maybe of plastic part that goes under oil pump? Eiher way dont look to good i'm afraid
The shells looked ok on the caps i removed so its probably the ones at either end which I couldnt remove as I couldnt get the socket onto the bolts. Anyone know where I can get hold of a 17mm socket with thinner walls?
bump, can someone please advise on the best way to open the bolts of the bearing caps next to the engine block wall, cant get a socket onto it.
