I'll be round tomorrow with the oil pressure gauge and sender from the scirocco - then we'll see what's really up.
Brilliant stuff, cheers Mike. Meanwhile I will check vagcat and see if I can use my 9A oil pump on the ABF.
just checked vagcat and the oil pump for the 9A and ABF are the same, including the drive gear which is different for the KR.
And the results from the VDO jury, are "quatre-vingt PSI". So lots of oil pressure (80+PSI at tickover). The engine is a bit rattly, but that could be a few things, so it looks like it's worth investigating a bit further, and it's probably a goer as an engine.
cheers for all your help Mike, I managed to swap my dodgy pas pump over and the new pump is making some straining noises when actually steering (more investigation needed), but main thing is that the engine seems ok so far. by the way Mike seems to think PAS is for girls!!
