My cousin had one in Signal Green & I went out in it once. He sold it to get married and regretted it ever since.

After selling it, he saw it on TV. The new owner was out watching the RAC Rally in 1990, Kankunnen was all but going to win it, fell off the one the ice, destroyed his Integrale, and was given a lift back to base by this guy in the RS2000. IIRC it was on one of the short Rally Report 10 mins updates. I had it taped, but by the time I'd heard, had somehow taped over it!

    I'd import a brand new Mk1 Golf Oettinger 16s.

I would also have loved the chance to buy a brand new end of the line 1992 Mk2 16v 3dr.

In spite of my Frenchness at the moment, my all time favourite cars are still old Golfs.

This picture is disturbing me with the naked man taking a picture of the car from the window:

Shame about the covers on the seats!

Could they be S*** ** seats, as fitted to the cars built in the S*** Valmet factory, in Finland? Supposedly much better than the cars built in the UK!

Did you ever wonder why Herr Blomqvist drove Lotus Sunbeam Rally Cars?

Did I ever relate, that I was once offered a job at MIRA. I turned it down. They wrote to me again, saying they had a job already lined up for me, sorting the front suspension on the Talbot Sunbeams. I turned it down!

He would have appreciated that I did not want to live in the West Midlands, near the A5!;)

Thing is, our house in North Derbys was worth so little, we could not afford to move![:^(]

Nay! Sunbeams were built at Linwood, near Glasgow. My Grandad was a toolmaker there at the time.

The Lotus versions were bog-standard 1.6s shipped to Hethel and fitted with the slant-4 and suspension upgrades.

The Horizon was however built in Finland... ;)

Talbot Horizon and Solara tappet settings were 1 inch IIRC.

Stick a box of spanners in a washing machine and you would sort of replicate the sound their engines made. ;)

    Ha ah! Ta again StuMc.

Seems you have developed a habit of correcting my faux pas![:$]

    From Wiki:

Despite looking almost identical, the American Omni and Horizon had few interchangeable parts with their European siblings. Aside from the heavier-looking American body panels and bumpers, the OHV Simca engines were replaced with a 1.7 L OHC engine sourced from Volkswagen, while MacPherson strut front suspension took the place of the torsion bar arrangement found in the European Horizon. The small Volkswagen engine used an enlarged Chrysler-designed cylinder head and intake manifold and produced 75 hp (56 kW) and 90 lbft (120 Nm). C1978

Was this the 'E' series engine?

If so, then the design process, employed by BL, was used in the Open University's 'Engineering Design' (sic) programmes, shown on BBC2.

I watched all of the OU Engineering and Maths programmes at that time.

What I still remember, is a programme devoted to the design of the 'E' series con rods. The engineer, working with the then new and advanced 'Finite Element' computer software, was tasked with designing the cheapest con rod that would last 100,000 miles! So, 'E' series motors were designed to break down at 100,001 miles!

At that time, Prof. M J French, of Lancaster University, was a consultant for Leyland. He wrote a book called: 'Conceptual Design for Engineers', of which I have an early copy. In it he wrote: "what is most important is to design the cheapest solution". (Perhaps he was actually an accountant?) Not the most cost effective, but the cheapest.

With regard to car design: He states that rear engined cars are not viable and are very bad engineering practice. Not heard of Porsche or Skoda then. Perhaps he listened to Jasper Carrot jokes, and believed them?

Suffice to say: My copy of the book has a massive amount of crossings out and annotations!
