Hey mike, the engine place in Preston isn't entech is it? My car has a sticker on the slam panel from there, got me thinking.. Cheers, stew
Not brave just stupid / oblivious lol thought it was a good idea , should have used a needle scabbler ? No aluminium oxide lol but will be getting another blast with a 5.5 kW power washer with a turbo nozzle so will be clean then a good air blast for good measure There VAG big ends and mains pic of big end shell on first page Do we have any crank super experts ? Super crank referbers ? And what colour should I paint the block any super tips to make it last ?
Or Jason of JMR for that matter Get a machine shop near you to have a look at that. Speak to Nige or RobT etc for places near you. At that rate, I would get someone to also check the block deck and bores. Best to get it done right the first time. Not a DIY job I am afraid.
Ahh I see, is that where you are having your engine assembled Mike? I had my vr re bored and rebuilt at awesome before they moved to their current new premises. This thread is very interesting, I haven't got much of a clue what you are all talking about! especially when you are able to see things in the photos! All looks fine to me! Good stuff, very interesting!
ric wood in manchester is a good engine place. other than that, andy larton at lad motorsport in morecombe
Ok so block is on my DIY engine stand and I've started cleaning it for paint Quite shinny after a going over with a twist not cup brush on a 115 mm grinder That's it for now got to go and do some work in the cold
Careful with those wire brushes, I have a bit of wire in my leg (near bone) that A&E couldn't get out (and they cut in, very very deep) Its visible quite clearly on the X ray All to note Jon
Had to go back to ophthalmology department three times to get a chunk of burr out of my eye ouch Don't worry Jon I've be doing it for 25 yrs on various bits of machinery lol How clean should it be for painting ??? How clean is to clean Ive been getting all the nooks and crannies with a carbide burr on a die grinder I'm I going to far ? If I'm not careful I'll end up smoothing the engine lol grinding of the cast nobbles etc
I've had the same with those wheels. Amazing at their job, but lethal too! Never had an injury like Jon though! I ALWAYS wear eye protection, but not leg protection to the same level. After cleaning my block, I can appreciate the work you've done Mike. Nice one.
I would have acid cleaned it myself, but each is own Your machine shop should have an acid bath, cleans it in side and out and no bits of metal that could be left on the inside They then hot tank in a caustic solution before pressure clean to make sure it is neutralised Apply paint out side then WD40 to everything else and job done
i once read an interesting article about surface treatment if all the insude if the block, water passages etc, this was to stop rusting which is a very good heat insulator so precisely what you dont want in a cooling system. theres also some stuff called glyptal psint which stops oil hanging around on the block inner walls abd drains it to the sump quicker
Right I've just ordered a load of POR 15 products off ebay from a car restoration company in Rochdale Some : Glyptal paint for the inside the block aids oil run off POR 15 aluminium engine enamel shinny POR 15 prep and ready ,a rust dissolver and etc primer in one Hope to get the stuff Tuesday or Wednesday
I don't have a machine shop yet always been diy till now lol I need to check out my local guy a few miles away I spoke to Ric Wood at Ric Wood Motorsport they've got some fancy equipment but 160 plus vat seems a bit steep for a Regrind and that's as long as it doesn't need a mm off I think the big end is 0.4 mm out so a .25 mm grind would give me 0.5 mm off the diameter ? How much variation is there between engine shops ? Local one is recomended buy a couple of mechanics I know and he's quoted 100 plus vat for grind I've pm'd Mr hillclimber too
