I may have missed it but is it a 020 gearbox?

If yes, you can use any MK3 1.8-2.0 8v starter motor. They are gear reduction units thus having more cranking torque then your original.

if it has the level warning relay 42/43 pull it out and see if the problem stops. if it does then its either level sender in tank, wiring to it or relay itself thats duff. you can bridge the 2 wires on the level sender plug to check if its that or not :)

the alternator and live cables are a straight fit, the middle ring terminal on the mk3 earth cable wont reach the chassis leg earth point on the mk1 chassis leg, so what I did was take 2 mk3 negative cables and cut the 2nd one down so i had just a length of cable with ring either end. 1 end of cable to the chassis leg, and attached the other to the main earth middle ring terminal with a nut and bolt. Hope that makes sense?

note the mk3 earth runs to a stud on the rearmost engine -> gearbox mounting bolt so steal that too and swap it to your abf engine :)

I used 2x mk3 battery -ve cables, you could use whatever you got lying around thats suitably beefy. the old mk1 earth cable even cut it down so you got 2x rings on a length of wire, 1 end to the chassis leg and the other to the mk3 cable somewhere, or to the stud on the engine even. all you need to do is get the chassis leg earthed well to the main battery earth somewhere

I sold my mk1 years ago unfortunately! lay the mk3 lead next to the mk1 lead and you'll see what I mean about the chassis leg point, you just need to run a thickish cable from here to the mk3 battery cable ring, or direct to the battery to earth it. you could use the old mk1 cable even, cut the battery end off so you have a braided cable with ring either end and run that to the battery or the ring in the middle of the mk3 cable :)

just knocked up another of my amazing mspaint diagrams

sweet as! the 6a dizzy cap could be perfect for mk1 16v owners too, but they are so bloody expensive for some reason!
