After praising the R32 no end (and 5 starring it) the End of Term report in EVO is pretty dire.
Total injconsistency and I have written a rather strong letter to them. Not impressed. They've done the same with the CTR, Scooby and others.
Usually love the mag but they can't make up their damn minds!
Could we all write in in protest?! letters@evo.co.uk [:x]

I think it was the headlight bulb that did it. ;)

The article isn't really that bad though is it?

Their main criticism is of the 4WD system, a criticism that in my opinion is completely valid. It is simply not as good as the equivalent systems in the Scoobies and Evo's- its way too biased towards front wheel drive and that is going to take away a lot of the fun.

It's still a good car, but it isn't a great car- the reality is that VW have not made a great hot hatch in a number of years, unfortunately this is also something that I don't think is going to change in the near future [:s]

Not read it -- but maybe they are saying for 20+k it could be a lot better...?

I don't think that would be too untrue.

If I were going to chuck twenty odd grand at a car, it wouldn't be going towards an R32. :)

Oh suprise, suprise the permanently embittered mk1 and 2 gang throws in their tw*penneth.
Stupid me should have bought a 15 year old car and stuck a load of mods on it then sniped at anyone who could afford a new car.
So no suggestions as to what you WOULD buy then? No suprises there. Just bitter negativity. Same when I had the mk3. I had a mk2 as well - Good car but ancient history now. You're like a stuck record the lot of you.
    t**sers.

    Sutherlandm,

I actually object to your comments, I don't drive a mk1 or mk2- i have driven a R32 and a number of other cars of a similar price range.

The facts are that the R32 has all of the flaws associated with 4WD systems without all of the benefeits, it is the most driver orientated of the Mk4 golf range but it is not as much fun as something like the Lupo GTi.

It's not an attack on you, but rather me questioning what Vw have done- the fact is that I'm not the only one who feels like this- in fact last week i had a chat with a managing director from a company owned by Audi Sport- and his feelings on much of the VAG range was similar.

If I had 25k to spend on a car and it had to be within the VAG group then if I'm truly honest the R32 would not be it. Sorry

Why are you so annoyed by other peoples opinion? you bought an R32 because that is what you wanted, i have a MK1 because that's what i wanted.
And if you're interested,if was going to spend 20-25K on a car i would buy a MK5 Diesel and spend the rest on the MK1.
it's horses for courses really. [:-B]

I know what Mr. Sutherland meant, even if it did come out in a moment of anger!

Let's look at it like this - I've got 23k to spend on a car. I'm going to use it everyday, so that pretty much throws old Ferrari's, TVR's and the like out of the window.
Now, let's look at new cars.
    BMW's for example:
    320i SE Saloon 23,275
    320d Saloon 22,500

So I pay 23k for a pretty much bog standard beemer and look like every other prick in a BMW in London??

Sod that. I'd take the R32 anyday.

    Thank you Tuff.
Some of you mk1 and 2 bores need to realise that new cars suit some of us.
We've all had old VWs when we were "growing up" and have now moved on.
I love all "interesting" VWs but the attitude that often seems to go with the older ones is just unreal.
My Mum has a mk2 Gti and Dad has a mk3 Gti. Funnily enough they'd rather have an R32.

And some or you R32 bores -- sorry, just you, need to realise some of us have an opinion about the R32 and feel it right to discuss it on a thread talking about an R32 review!
