pretty good weight with the rocco iain. at least with the lead you can get it low down and in the correct area. good result steved, you should do a race report in motorsport section. what championship you running in? i think a big chunk of weight can be shaved with wheels. i had some 13" alleycats on the car for weighting. also had my mates 15" compo's on it for moving it about etc. there is a big difference in wheel weights. one which i think is over looked in most instances. will try to get scales out and weigh up the combonations as examples. still tempted to get out the holesaw tonight and do the inner 3/4 panels before it go's for sand blasting and paint.
I had a bit of a look at this when I was trying to decide on wheels. A couple of examples for 15" wheels: OZ Superleggera 15" 5.2kg Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 15" 6.0kg Team Dynamics Pro Race 2 15" 6.4kg Compomotive MO 15" 8.5kg So changing from Compomotive MOs to OZ Superleggeras will save 4 * 3.3 = 13.2kg (or 29lbs)! That's a lot of (unsprung) weight. For more info, look at www.wheelweights.net. Google didn't throw up anything like that for tires when I looked though.
I noticed how heavy the toyos were when I got some fitted a few months ago....I took off some Pirellis and fitted the Toyos and they were significantly heavier. They must be a very stiff carcas.
AW doors with my own rather uniqe hinges. probably one of the reasons the cars rather light. if i was doing them again i'd look to get them onto a door frame and gut the metal as much as possible. nice figures on wheel weights. will get my alleycats, slicks and mates wheels weighed up at weekend.
I put my MK1 on the scales at Brands on thursday. All steel panels, still has bumpers on, perspex windows, multi point cage, stripped int, Honda engine, full tank of fuel 885kg Also on the day Chris checked his MK1 also steel panelled, no bumpers, perspex windows, 6 point cage, stripped int, 16v on K jet, 1/3 of a tank of fuel 825kg I think i had about 30kg more fuel, bumpers 10kg my cage must be the rest as i went abit overboard when i put it in. Dry weight i think mine 845kg Chris 815kg Ray
830 Steve.. that's light! We weighed quite a few Mk2s last year in the Mk2 race series and the 8-valves were generally around the 870-880 mark (minus driver), with full glass, brackets, tank etc. 16s were in the 900kg region (usually weighed with driver, and lacking driver weight data!) Where were the gains?
I've not gone over the top, 1.3 shell (no sunroof) Fibreglass bonnet and boot lid, The usual floor sealer removal and bumper steel removed etc etc, 830kgs was with the carb'd 16v so will now have to weigh it witht he 20v.
I've got a set of corner weight scales, Hmmm i'm racing at Brands on the Bank Holiday in March so should re weigh it.
I was basing my next Mk2 build at around 800kg....there is a lot of weight lost when converting to carbs, you can get rid of manifold upper and lower, airbox, metering head, WUR, injectors, airlow meter, accumulator, pump, lift pump, filter, throttle body etc etc and replace with two carbs, a pump and a regulator. Edit....that is 16v of cause
Even though its not a track car, for a comparison, i stripped my Mk2 of seats, rear half of the carpet, 70% sound deadening (apart from front doors and some odd dynomat) Spare wheel, *kept front seats, dash, heater* about 7L of fuel weighed in at 918KG how much do mk2's usually weigh? as it suggests it weighs 1420 on my VIN plate... surely that isnt right!
the vin wieght will prob be the gross vehicle wieght, not kerb that you are looking at. Come spring I will have my mk1 on the calibrated offical govenment scales at work, so I will report back on the wieghts. im looking for 800kg or so
As in one of my last posts my MK2 16V was 835kgs with cage and the MK2 with a 20VT engine was 865kgs. The new MK3 should be lighter.
