no the steering column is the same for both. did you accidentally allow it to collapse a bit?

you just push on them, and they collapse. to re-extend just give a good tug! I used my old manual column when i converted to pas ;)

It took me two hours and a lot of swearing to learn that the shaft extended, could not for the life of me work out why it was too short when it seemed right a few minutes earlier!

I also found that the shafts had different diameters for the lower column bearing/bush thingy... I had to pack out one with aluminium tape to get a snug lower fit. Later bought a new column with correct diameter. Also the Boss splines changed along the way as well.

main thing is dont forget the tension spring between the column and the UJ, that helps keep it extended and also pulls the column snug into the lower bearign to remove play :)

    got ya!

another question..speed senor on gearbox? all electronic or can you get a cable version. the gearbox has a random thick black cable on it. ontop of the driver side flange.
weird thing is..the loom has a electronic speed sensor plug:S

and the rev counter..similair to 1.8t need a tacho box? or is there a way to make it work on mk2 clocks?

Remove the sensor from the gearbox, Mk2 1.3 speedo cable fits Mk2 clocks and 02A/J gearbox
This is probably mentioned several times in other threads

leave the sensor in the box, unscrew the 3 pin plug part off the back then fit 1.3 speedo cable to the back of it :)

yeah its already got the cable..i just wasnt sure on what it was.. nor was i sure how a cable gives a speedo reading so thought it was for something else.
the abf loom just has a speedo sensor plug on it..its just hanging so as ben says the speedo cable plugs onto the back of the clocks

    thanks r.j

Car went in for a Rear Crank seal replacement..went to pick it up today and it wont fire up?

    was running prior to this..

no spark, no fuel pump prime..checked the relays and fuse(pump) all clicking and not broken.
dont have vagcom..is it safe to say the ecu is dead?
I dont know if they've messed around with earths or lives but they all looked to be there.

if the fuel pump relay clicks but no prime you can be pretty sure the problem is pump fuse or wiring, it could be the main live or earth for the fusebox is bad though check the battery connections especially the gearbox earth

just to avoid confusion. we just tested the relay my physically pushing the spring loaded plate down, it would click then.

seems like hes maybe taken an earth off somewhere..

Okay went to the car again today..

blown fuse for fuel pump so when i manually press the relay i can hear the pump swirl.
but when i plug the ecu and leave it still nothing and on turn over nothing.
Also im not getting a live at pin 33 (brown blue wire?) i tried running a feed from the battery and nothing..

when i turn the ignition on, i tried removing the coil pack feed to the coil distributor and got a nasty little shock.. Would the ecu control the live to the coil pack?

dont really want to buy another ecu for it.

woops pin 33 is a earth

    pin 38 has 12v going to it..so does 23.

    relays are in tact..

if you get a shock from spark lead or coil, they're faulty and need replacing.

check pin 1 of the ecu is earthed, 33 is the common ground for all the sensors if you put a live to this it might not have done the ecu any favours?

try disconnecting the ecu plug, switch on the ignition then earth pin 6 on the plug, if the fuel pump primes the wiring from the ecu and fusebox for the fuel pump is ok
