They are watchable on a monitor or smaller screen, but on a larger display the flaws become glaringly obvious. [><]

I've got the writer version, but its essentially the same.

    Very happy with it [:D]

Its also probably the quietest drive I've ever owned

Cool have you tried burning to Bluray discs then or copying a Bluray film? Is the quality as good as proper Bluray movies you buy in the shops?

Nope, not tried burning anything yet. I wasn't really bothered about Blu-ray writing but wanted a combo drive before xmas and the readers were nowhere to be seen.

You would only be able copy the single layer films though (25Gb) but the quality should be exactly the same (once you've got round the protection)

I've heard this too, but there have been similar rumours before. I'll wait for an official announcement .

The move by Warner was a massive blow though, so such an announcement by Toshiba while disappointing wouldn't be entirely unexpected, if sooner than I might have predicted.

I couldn't care less about gaming, but it's good news generally - this sort of product format needs standardisation imo.

Look identical to the ps3 tbh, just pick one for the games you like.

even more reason for developers to concentrate on exploiting the extra power of the ps3 and huge blu-ray capacity.

watch now as the 360 gradually fades into the background ;)

    ps3 is the future

I remember the same quotes when cd-rom 1st came out for the pc...

"with all that extra space the games will get so much better"

We just ended up with more of the same crap & longer pre rendered intros back then.

If it's a turd on the cd no matter how big it is it will still be a turd so size doesn't always mean better games.

    [:[]

just cos that was the case back then it doesn't mean anything now.

    and if it's not a turd? [:[]

    Then it's a good game.

But i wouldn't say that a PS3 game is going to be any better than a 360 game purely on Disc space that's all.

This is a HD movie format thread not a console thread tbh [:[]

Well the worse format won thanks in part to some very underhand tactics by Sony

It was the Warner decision that ultimately decided this and none of you (or me) could have predicted that.

All I can say is I would agree with the following comment made on AVForums

    You sound almost bitter?

So, what made HDDVD better then? From what I've read Bluray's have better capacity and slightly better playback.

Blu-Ray can scale to 100Gb but I think that'll be 3rd generation. There is no easy way that HD-DVD could scale to such levels.

probably not but it is possible, depends on how they use it.

it's common knowledge that the ps3 has the potential to produce better games than the 360 due to it's cpu architecture but it depends on whether developers are going to invest their resources in exploiting it. what i'm saying is that now bluray is THE format, more people are going to see the ps3 as a very good investment indeed so there is more reason for developers to focus on how to get the best out of the machine rather than doing half-arsed ports from the 360. it's already started to happen anyway...
