I wonder what performance increase it would get with a crossflow head.

WoW, John Read did is homework right !
194 BHP @ 6000 rpm ! With a 2500 rpm range with minimum 180 bhp on tap... that must be a very driveable engine....and FAST

Not sure but John is building me an 8v crossflow to the same spec with a bit of extra head work due to the extra space around the ports so I will be able to let people know when its finished. Although VW have pretty much kept the same port design as a counterflow which is a shame as there could of been some big improvements. Most of the waterways have had to be welded up to get decent ports to match the big valves. Having a decent cold air feed should help with the intake at the front and it will get much less heat soat from the exhaust manifold keeping the power up. [:D]

I'm not 100% sure of the spec of this motor I can get somemore info if people are interested? The Valves will probably be 40.5mm intake and the cam is probably 315+ duration not sure on the lift. It's all one off stuff, the cam will be to John's spec as are the JE pistons and Arrow Rods.

    Cheers

Little Clip of the John Read 20V motor 4th gear in MAD20V's ex Golf that I now own. Limiter comes in at 8750rpm. It pulls hard to the red line just had to back off here.

I miss that noise so much & feeling so much...[:^(]

Also clip full throttle on Combe on my first track day in the car.

Excuse my mates dodgy Bristolian accent. ;)

A couple of pics of the bay the lower picture is pre the airbox so you can see the massive trumpets and the 51mm bodies..Apologies about the old school mobile picture..

i thought the john reed engine used farndon steel stuff(rods) to his specs etc?and id guess the valves for that power would be 42/35?
