I'm assuming you have the liners sold by VW Heritage? I just bought the drivers rear and keep meaning to trial fit it. I wish I'd fitted one before the holy rust popped through
Yes, both made by the same company but completely different finishes. You can’t see them both at the same time I suppose
Great work. I like the engine cover. Never knew you could get rear arch lines for the mk3, so will be interested to see how they fit for you
Another beautiful day so some more work. Gave all the repairs a top coat to keep the weather out as much as possible. It will be getting sprayed in April so need to get the last arch done, wheel arch protectors fitted and GTi arches fitted so I’m not drilling holes near a newly painted car! One thing that was bugging me was the wonky clutch cable. I’ve seen other cars with a support wire so I fashioned this. Coat hanger is waaayyyyyy too weak so I used one of the wires from inside the backrest of a seat, it’s good stiff stuff A lick of paint. And we have gone from wonky……. To straight. Cable needed a bit of adjustment too so that’s done. In other news Ralph picked up a NOS strut brace I found on Facebook for £60 this morning so now I need to research the best way to fit it and set it up ….. I love it really
Mate that clutch cable is a top tip as mine is a real wonky-donky Can you post up some pics the rear liners and how the heck you've secured them. I may even consider putting these on my Corrado ..
Haven’t got that far yet but I will deffo post some pics and what I do to fix them. As a starter I think the arches need to go on first and then the liner laps over them. It doesn’t look like they will need much fixing as they are pretty snug just "loose" fitted.
the bracket is standard fit on the MK2, but they're getting hard to find these days. some have a similar idea but attached to the coolant tank studs up top depends on engine/box
Nice work on the cable support. Mine has the standard one but it’s designed for the self adjust cable and is too wide to properly hold the manual cable.
This landed this morning. Got it straight on the car. Absolute stonking bargain from eBay, I actually feel sorry for the guy selling it as I was the only bidder (it won’t last long, don’t worry ). It’s an unused Moto-Lita Eagle leather wheel. A touch smaller than the original. Absolutely love it
Nice wheel, had one for a while but sold it as prices rose stupidly on classic mini stuff, and needs must at the time.
Ralph collected another Facebook bargain the other day. However, on test fitting there are some issues. Coolant reservoir too high……. Air intake pipe too high….. So a plan had to be hatched. Windscreen washer bottle to boot, coolant reservoir to where windscreen washer bottle is and a new intake pipe. First job move windscreen washer bottle. @dodgy and I brainstormed this for a while, considering what bottle would fit with what pump etc. The standard bottles off eBay only come with a single outlet pump so that’s no good. But then I had a minor light bulb moment - fit the original vw pump to the eBay bottle, would that work? So I bought a bottle for £10, not much to lose. Pump removed and compared, they look the same. Fitted, they are the same
The obvious place for the bottle was in the right side of the boot behind the rear light as that is where the washer hoses are. Behind the black cover panel there wasn’t enough metal to secure the bottle bracket to so another bracket was needed. Fabled it up and gave it a nice contemporary brushed finish Had to place a spacer over one hole due to the shape of the panel. Brackets Brackets in place And bottle in place. I simply reconnected the existing hoses the opposite way round so that the long front to back now feeds the front and the bit that ran to the rear washer still does that. I have tested the wiring which remains exactly the same and it works fine. I just need to get some new wire to run though the car as I don’t currently have anything long enough. I will also have to unwrap some of the loom in the engine bay to make a nice neat job of it. The job took significantly longer than I thought it would, primarily because I had to make a new bracket. About 3 hours to this point. Next up, moving the coolant reservoir
These arrived at the weekend. I saw a bargain on Facebook too good to miss but the seats were 230 miles away in Manchester. @dodgy very very kindly drove across Yorkshire for me and picked them up. He then, even more kindly (actually the kindness was more Allie’s) stored them in his spare bedroom for me They are MK3 Recaros and virtually like new. The bolsters are completely solid and there is a single repair on one. The black is black and red is red which is not well represented in the pictures. Ralph cleaned them straight away and now they awaits leg modification. Very very pleased.
My pleasure @PhilRyder , even if I had to venture to the wrong side of the hills! They are fantastic, black as you say, not a purpley brown, and the best bit was finding they are heated and have the relay pack underneath still. Hardest bit was keeping the cats from darting in the room and having a rest on them, think was reasonably successful, but apologies if a tabby hair on them. Ralph had an absolute steal with what they cost too, will match the car perfectly. They stopped me piling too much in the room too, you saw the photo of how the dining room was during the decorating that's been going on.
Second phase of operation “make the strut brace fit!” completed today - moving the coolant reservoir. First remove and clean up the old washer bottle bracket. Then I levelled round the turret to make sure the reservoir would be at the same height as previously. Because the turret slopes outwards and to make sure the bracket remained vertical and level spacers were required. Reservoir in place. All new hoses were required as the outlets now point the wrong way. A 180 degree silicone bend and the requisite size hoses. This was not a straightforward job at all and the new hoses were a pain to fit on and one throttle body mount had to come off. Also there are two hoses strapped together in a double sleeve behind the rocker cover which had to be cut off. But hey, the strut brace will fit at that end now Just waiting for the new air intake pipe to be made now so the other end will fit.
