looking good Gary. my ickle ibiza is looking quite bare too at the mo.. sensible road car no more.. loud rattly but fast and fun. I have'nt even attacked the shed loads of bitumen stuck everywhere yet... working on safety bits I must have first, then the laborious tar removal job. Watching what you're doing helps motivate me. A boring triva question. How Heavy is a passenger airbag from a seat ibiza cupra to the nearest 100g answer later
Nice work, really need to sort a cage for mine once it is built up again, this thread has given me a much needed kick up the bottom Al
Thanks guys Bill, it comes off suprisingly easy with a heat gun and scraper, then lots of thinners /gunwash on a rag to get the residue off. Then float around on the fumes Ordered an OMP eco seat from GPR (birthday present from Claire!) for passenger side, as the stock passenger seat will be much too high = head + cage interface Airbag weighs about 2 kilo at a guess. When I had my cage Gary I padded every bar I thought is possible for conatct in a road going non crash helmet bump. Included the main hoop A pillar bars round to the hoop and the door bars... Will you mount the passenger seat Nicky Grist style? Scott
I've got to be a bit careful as I always take spare wheels to track days and usually put one behind each front seat, so really ought to leave room for them. But they'll fit in somewhere no doubt - I've padded some of the cage ( screen rails, door bars and roof rails) but ran out of padding - local place Randall motorsport stock it so i'll pop down there one lunch time and get a couple more bits.
I'm going to be going through this cage install with the Vento in the next few months. I like PhatVR6 are going for 6 pont cages but I can't decide if I want the easier route of a bolt in cage or cut the dash and do the full weld in job. I'd like to cut the dash but I have nightmares about pulling the dash out with all my alarm wiring behind. It will be worth the effort in the long run I'm sure. At the rate my project is going I may miss a second show season! At least the engine is being mapped this Friday, finally get the R32 on ITB's back for some serious right foot action
I always thought the joint where the door bar meets A pillar looked like it would screw your ankles in a side impact... = loads of padding! Scott
Good write up there Gary, given me inspiration to get mine done when I can afford it (maybe next year eh..). Those die-grinders have a million uses
Another thanks to Julian @ Balance motorsport here. Spoke to him on Friday about my cage, listened to him shout about lemmons on the phone!!??!! then mailed him Saturday with my details. This morning around about 10am i get a call from him saying he has tracked me a front section down and can get it sent straight to me!! So i have some more welding to do in the next few weeks!
Gearbox engine and exhaust is up for grabs... Decided i couldn't sell this heap of metal now. I'm too attatched to it! Plans are afoot, but i have no idea what will end up under the bonnet!
GVK... I didnt realise until I saw the pictures of you cage that the SD cages mounted in different places, mine mounts further up the rear tower at the rear and further forwards and on a platform at the front, is yours further back to retain the dash?? got any more pics could do with some pics of the front hoop from where it mounts to the floor to where it goes round the dash Edited by: motorhead
It goes around the dash at the front Daz, tbh they've could've designed it so it follows the a pillar all the way down then follow 'the curve' of the dash. Your's is 'more' of a motorsport cage I think.
Very good read this, Ive got a cage ready to go in mine but havent got the balls yet to strip it out completly. Whats even worse I'm a welder fabricator by trade, so this shoulden't phaze me!
