Right, the good news is it started and ran ok. Bad news is the oil light won't stop flashing, a bit of smoke started to appear from the back of the engine. I don't think the oil pump is working, does it normally take a few minutes to kick into gear? I ran it for about 3 minutes then turned it off because I was worried I could smell burning. Also it sounds like the tappets are really loud, I don't know whether it's loud because it isn't getting oil or the tappets need adjusting? I know in the morning my dads navara taps like mad until the oil hits the top of the engine and it then goes quiet.
    Any suggestions?

won't there be too much oil pressure, and so oil is being burnt leading to an oil burner engine? Oil light will flash if pressure is too high as well.

    16v tappets need no adjusting.

I don't know if this is common for a newly built engine? Do I run it longer and hope it starts kicking up oil? I fitted a new oil cooler and new oil filter with the ABF housing. I filled the oil filter up before fitting it.

That's really strange. I did the same as you and it's been running fine for 1500km....

I'd check that the oil pick up pipe is clean for example....

don't you have an oil pressure gauge? Get one, they're cheap on ebay (about 15Pounds delivered)

Try removing the dizzy king lead, and cranking it over for a minute or 2 for a few seconds at a time, to see if it primes up, it will tap its nuts off until it does...the burning smell is probably any chemicals you've used, and any spilt oil etc burning on the block. Mine stopped after a while.

Have you definitely installed the drive skew gear from the intermediate shaft to oil pump when the engine was getting rebuilt?

These engines are not guilty of being hard to raise oil pressure.
Having run the completely rebuilt engine for 3 minutes with no oil pressure is a worry.

Yes I can definitely say the Drive screw is in. Anyway I can tell if the engine is building pressure?

    Oil light should go out.
Or to eliminate a duff oil pressure switch you could remove the switch and crank the engine (not start) to see if oil pours or squirts out the switch's hole.
