This is what the GTi should be. The R is making the GTi less special. Looks bloody handsome though.

The R brand of cars have and are always completely different to the GTI.

Think of the GTI as the Audi A3 S Line with 2.0T.
Think of the R20 as the Audi S3 Quattro.

Nobody complains that the A3 2.0T Sline should have been the S3 do they? No.

The GTI couldnt ever step on the premium brandings feet. This will retail between 25-30k, so if this is what the GTI should have been, then it wouldnt have been the affordable hot hatch would it?

Unsurprisingly it looks bland and is underpowered for the amount it weighs.

    Underwhelmed again.

It is awesome looking, but they've just essentiall styled it the same as the scirocco, which is a bit of a shame IMO.

The golf gets some nicer bits by the look of it though, 4wd and the reacro seats. The scirocco doesnt get either.

I'm just waiting on pricing and specs being released before deciding on the Rocco R or not. . .

It does look miles better than the GTi. It should be the GTi, instead to Gti is the mid-range lukewarm hatch that's not really all that special.

I think it needs 300BHP, you'd think to compete with the Focus RS they'd give it a nice big amount of grunt.

Dunno about them lasting forever now, don't think any car companies want to make something that reliable anymore.

Not even rust Chris, I was reading about a problem with the new engines in the tech section about the way it seconds waste gases back into the system or something.

Speaking of rust, there's people that are finding rust on their Mk5s aswell, it's sad that they're not built the way they used to be. You get 15 years out a Mk2 before it starts getting the metal cancer... I don't know what crack they smoke now. It's all to make you spend more money really.

It's got similar BHP/ton to what they were producing 20 years ago...

I know standard Golfs aren't amazing at all, which is why I'm putting 2 engines in mine then it'll be amazing

Even if I could afford one, this would be pretty low down on my 'thingstospend30kon' list!!!

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)? Nothing new there, though usually in diesels.

Let's keep it on topic though - discussion of old vs new for a separate thread please, which you're welcome to start.

its not a numbers game on paper, this isn't top trumps.

Andy947 summed it up for me, far to many people living in the dream that the mk2 is the best car ever....

The mk2 is only the bestest car ever in a driver form with a gti cam...end of.

But back to topic the R20 Golf is very nice indeed - plus I like the fact its different to the GTI as the way i see it the Golf GTI is for the masses, whereas the 'R-line' is more exclusive for those who want that bit more from the car.
