I've never bought a new or nearly new car and know nothing about it, However, it's a performance car, aimed at enthusiastic drivers. If i had a notional 28k to spend, i'd be looking at all my options. Deako have you included deprciation in your 5 year comparison, for us ****wits?
I didnt call you a ****wit, i said the comparison was a ****wit idea. How much to service a 911? 1k-2k? How much to service a Golf on VW fixed price sevicing? About 250. 2nd hand cars still depreciate. Its a mass market car, id bet insurance for most people on a 911 or CSL is out of reach too. BIG picture? Although VW only aim to sell 500 Golf R's in the UK each year, which will guarantee high residuals. Depreciation will be low, due to demand.
Inspection service 350 - yearly Minor 420 - every 2 years Major 650ish every 4 years. Brakes about every 4 years @ 1000 Rear tyres about 500 a pair Fronts about 300 a pair - both 'N' rated and priced accordingly! Then there's the extended warranty at 1350 per year. You do the maths... They sure do...the days of the depreciation-proof 911 went a long time ago! Same postcode, age, driving record, NCD... 911 approx 7-800. Mk6 GTI = 270, S3 approx 300, so R about the same. = big numbers.
ess three, is that dealer prices, or specialists? good to get the real if depressing picture, however it does look like all the 911s on autotrader have gone up in value.
It's a perfectly valid comparison. Older higher value car with big running costs but possibly less depreciation against a new Golf R or similar with warrant and peanuts servicing... Horses for courses...overall, over 5 years, they'd be closer than you think if you get lucky with the other option. Get unlucky...and it'll hurt you. Big time. With the Golf, that option doesn't exist...
Dealer, fixed price. I'm too far away from a dealer for it to have been worth considering. Of course, you can do it cheaper... But you could not service the Golf either... In both cases, the warranties go out the window and you are on your own. Best have deep pockets. Oh, and as for prices...mine went up 7k in 12 months from the total meltdown of a year ago! Still doesn't make any financial sense what so ever though...good job I've never been any good at maths!
Im loving the look of that, but not in that blue. Its would look so much nicer in Silver or Black tbh. Power should be over the 300bhp mark, but 266 is still great.
I don't get what everyone is seeing, it's ugly, expensive (30k for a golf - get real!) and nowhere near enough power - yes I know it can be mapped for more power but thats even more money - and if they're only planning to sell a mere 500 a year in the uk it should look and go way better than it does, bottom line - not impressed and no it isnt because I can't afford one or that I think my mk2 is the be all and end all or that i'm trying to start an argument, just stating the facts The Scirocco on the other hand gets it all right.
And how much do you expect the Scirocco to be if the Golf is too expensive? Standard Roc can be specced to 28k with only a couple of options. Roc R will be 26k ish standard. 30k with a couple of options easy.
26K is still a hefty two and a half grand less than the Golf and the Scirocco is far better looking, plus I don't mind spending money on something that looks good - maybe thats me being shallow
I think the Golf looks good too, but its all a matter of opinion. Most people think Mk2 Golfs are fugly, but we still find them irresistable. It doesnt mean its a bad car though, and i think it will be tuned to be better than the S3, especially with the new 4WD system.
I have no doubt that if I drove one i'd been blown away by it, but I just don't 'want' one if that makes sense? Plus I love your mk5 as well so I can't see why you'd want to change it? I think they got the looks of the mk5 gti and R models spot on and the new model is a step back in terms of appearence
I was watching re-runs of Top Gear the other evening when they were talking about the mk2 Golf GTI and how it compared to the Ford RS Turbo of the time the single biggest difference between the 2 cars - the owners. I think that VW have created a car in the spirit of all the previous Golfs - it will appeal to those that don't think tucking their tracksuit bottoms into their socks is cool ala the new RS. Equally the VW owner not considered as pretentious as alot of Audi owners are. I like this new R20 - not because of the power or how it compares to the RS or the Audi's but because it is totally understated. I love my mk2 but believe me if I had the money I would just as quickly snap up a mk5 or mk6 gti/r32/r20 I like them all for the same reason. I couldn't care less about appreciation/depreciation either. I just love driving them. I've lost count of how much i've spent on spare parts for my vw's over the years...
this r20 might grow on me like mk5s did, but i still dont think it looks special enough or has enough power for a ltd ed car with a premium, but if it takes your fancy it will undoubtedly be a very good car after a remap.
Scary how true this still is. I was at the F*rd parts dealer two weeks ago, getting a spare crank sensor for the track Mk1, and who should be being served when I arrived? A man in white socks and white trainers who looked like he'd come straight off a sunbed in the Med. I just looked at the ceiling.... and smiled
