As i need to respray my Mk1 (need to respray arches but exterior of car has been resprayed a non-standard colour I can't match) I was considering matt blacking it for the Rat look.

It's only a 1.3 Golf so not like I'm destroying a Campaign GTI or anything. Has anyone got and pics of a matt black Mk1 as I'm trying hard to visualise it!

muppet - that one looks great, love the bonnet  do you know how it was painted?

I've been considering this too, as I really can't afford a proper respray and I reckon this is the cheapest and easyest ways I'll be able to get a vauguely respectable finish - I'll probably be doing it myself with rattle cans [8D]

    ta for all the pictures!

Defo tempted now but can't decide between satin and matt. Worried that satin will look like you tried to do a proper respray and just did it badly!

Like mk1vdub said I can't afford a proper respray and figure at about 2 a can for Hycote rattle cans I could make my car look respectable ish for a max of say 40?

I've got chrome trim line to go and chrome handle inserts to break it up a bit, maybe try and do a chrome strip on the bumpers and boot edge too. Got Lupo Sport alloys to go on as well (and yes it needs a damn good drop, going 60mm to start)

how would one go bout gettin a matt finish??? is it just not using lacquer???

wouldn't not using a protective top coat leave the paint exposed to the elemnts hence chipping and cracking of the paint after a little while?

Well I'm no expert but as I understand only metallic paint need a lacquer, flat colours don't.

As for the Matt paint it comes out matt rather than shiney like your usual spray (same way you get matt and silk emulsions I suppose) but as to why I dunno, sure some paint expert can tell us?

Have sprayed the wheelarch matt black just to cover the filler etc and looks pretty good.

Matt black will look rubbish - go back and look at the MK1 Scirocco - cheap. [8(]

The RS125 came out matt black the year after I bought mine and people took great delight in trying the showroom one's for size leaving them covered in fingerprints. [xx(]What happens when it gets some bird crap on it? Bit hard to "polish" a matt finish methinks... [:s]
