ok look behind the fusebox for G1/5 see if its there, and check for F/3 while there for a blue for the alternator:

yellow/brown might be the G1/5 one if it had a ring terminal on it

Yeah it had a ring connector on it , just in the process of ripping out the dash to make things easier

with g1/5 before you start chasing it back into the loom get yourself a random bit of wire earth 1 end and stuff the other end into the back of g1/5. if it doesn't help with the clocks issue then no need to worry about it, problem is elsewhere. if it does fix it then you could just earth it behind the fusebox rather than dig into the car harness to find it, makes no real difference.

regardless you'll need to dig in to find the alternator blue wire though :(

where did you order it from? the SPI cables all the same for codes ABD, AAM, ABS and ABU part number 1H0721555D. Looking at this catalogue I have to hand the length is listed to be 1200mm?

I have the closest match I can see for 600mm is a GTI cable 1H0721555A/J?

christ knows what that cable is, it certainly aint an SPI cable. This is the one on heritage, fair bit longer and the pedal end is pretty different?

the one above isn't in stock at heritqage though, but the later version is available and easier to find on ebay as well:

when I connect the battery the needles on my dials are going nuts , the wires that have been cut and not connected
Were all bunched up and not covered separately etc , so bare wire ends close to each other , even though they've been cut I'm wondering if they could have been earthing out on each other ? Causing the needles to go crazy
