So 1984 - 1992? Or did you get the Golf/Jetta 2 later on? I would be surprised if you had a 1984cc engine in SA as early as 1984 though. We didn't get them until 1988. Was it introduced part way through?
Great, thanks - updated again. Also looking for more details on Auto Tech, ABT and other tuner engine packages used. It's very interesting to see some tuners have been installing 84mm pistons. For a while, it was suspected that this was marginal on block bore thickness, and that these were being used only on unofficially-cast special blocks for motorsport use. This proves it is feasible in mainstream blocks. The Audi 85mm BTCC/STW bore remains a bit suspicious and various believe those were special replica castings, such were the games manufacturers were playing with rules interpretation in the '90s hay days of BTCC and STW.
Thanks Tim I remember this page Louis. So these will be the catalysed late Mk2 Golf spec USA 9A units? ETKA says 8/89-07/91, 136bhp, so same as all others? Was the KR sold in the USA, or was it the PL? Anyone?
A few calcs: 160lbft @ 6500 gives you 198hp 160lbft @ 7000 gives you 213hp 160lbft @ 7500 gives you 228hp 160lbft @ 8000 gives you 243hp 160lbft @ 8500 gives you 258hp 160lbft @ 9000 gives you 274hp If the figures are to be believed, the ibiza made a torque max of 162ftlb at 6500, and a power max of 250hp @ 7800 the figures dont stack up - either the reported torque figure is low, or the power high. My bet is the former especially given the ABF golf is reported to make 180 ftlb - much more like it for typical power levels seen in VW valvers
KR was sold in the EU where the emission stds and fuel quality where not as stringent. PL = same long engine sans KR intake cam and added CIS-E fuel system inc/mechanical evaporative control and knock control. When they wanted more power the engine got bigger and was lifted out of the 31 Passat = 9A.
At 250bhp@7800r/min you are producing ~171lbft of twist which is possible in a race engine of this size. What I would not expect is to have a lesser peak point reported as the advertised torque figure. The same mistake/misprint is present in the 265PS variant. So you are right there seems to be a mistake.
I know the PL was sold in Europe (or some of Europe). The direct question I meant to ask (!) was which 1.8 16v was sold in the USA? A castrated KR, or a further castrated PL?
USA versions of PL and 9A added to post 1. There appears to be a small difference in compression on the 9A. Info taken as read from mk1.'s link for now, unless anyone knows different!
Done Eddie, all done - thanks. Made an amend to ADL description. ABF not sold in the USA are you saying? (bottom right). Where was it sold? UK, Europe + ?
Yes, I can remember a Mk1 which was broken up by raddo7 IIRC, which had a high output. It wasn't obvious what it was though, and very much a home-brew. Edit, found the old ad: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=149547
had a search on e38 but no luck, found this with a dyno plot http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=79032
ABF powertrain was not available in the US and Canada as far as I am aware. Their got the 1.9TDI and 2.0 ABA engine in their base MK3 and the anchor engine in the top of the range model. That engine may have been costly to meet the OBD2 monitoring regulations of 1996 and achieve the marketed 150bhp with their rubbish fuels.
I wonder if it sold? another 35bhp with a wilder regrind ? any idea were the spec for the eng came from Chris
